Collider a écrit:
Exclusive: Scarlett Johansson to Produce and Star in 'Tower of Terror' Movie for Disney BY JEFF SNEIDER
The studio is staying in business with its 'Black Widow' star, according to sources.
Two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson will produce Disney's Tower of Terror movie, which will be developed as a starring vehicle for the studio's Black Widow actress, Collider has exclusively learned.
Toy Story 4 director and Inside Out scribe Josh Cooley is currently writing the script, though plot details are being kept under wraps somewhere on the tower's top floor. Johansson will produce via her company These Pictures alongside Jonathan Lia, and though there's no director formally attached yet, Disney will aim high, according to sources -- especially since Johansson is coming off of dual Oscar nominations for her stellar work in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit in addition to her high-profile turn in Marvel's Black Widow.
Representatives for Disney and Johansson had no comment.
Tower of Terror is, of course, based on the popular Disney theme park attractions, which culminate with a free-falling elevator drop that results in some priceless photos. The exhilarating ride features a creepy narrator who sounds like The Twilight Zone host Rod Serling, and there were always long lines due to high demand from thrill-seekers. The ride was previously turned into a 1997 TV movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, though a new theatrical feature has been in development since 2015, when John August was tapped to write a treatment about five people in a posh hotel who take an elevator and disappear after it's hit by lightning.
Following the global success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Disney has been eager to turn its most beloved theme park rides into movies, and I imagine Tower of Terror will be developed with a PG-13 rating in mind, just like all of the Pirates movies and the upcoming Jungle Cruise movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The movie is, after all, called Tower of Terror. As far as movies based on Disney rides go, only Tomorrowland was rated PG, and that one underperformed at the box office. Disney-owned ABC also made a TV pilot based on the Thunder Mountain ride back in 2013, but it wasn't ordered to series.
Johansson will soon be seen reprising her iconic role as Natasha Romanoff in her very own solo movie, Black Widow, which will be released simultaneously on Disney+ as well as in theaters on July 9. Johansson is also attached to star opposite Taron Egerton in WB's new Little Shop of Horrors movie, and she's due to reprise her voice role as the lovable porcupine Ash in Sing 2. On the producing side, Johansson's company These Pictures is developing the drama Bride, which is in the works at A24 and Apple.
Meanwhile, It was announced earlier this week that Johansson will be the recipient of the 35th American Cinematheque Award this November, which is a major career honor. Johansson is represented by CAA, the law firm of Morris Yorn Barnes Levine Krintzman Rubenstein Kohner Endlich & Gellman, and True Public Relations, while Cooley is repped by CAA, Grandview and Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris Bernstein Trattner & Klein.
Ooooh !

Scarlett Johansson and Disney Settle ‘Black Widow’ Pay Lawsuit
Scarlett Johansson and Disney have reached a settlement over her blockbuster lawsuit that accused the studio of sabotaging the theatrical release of “Black Widow” to prop up Disney Plus.
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Johansson had sought a $50 million payout from the studio.
“I am happy to have resolved our differences with Disney,” Johansson said in a statement on Thursday. “I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together over the years and have greatly enjoyed my creative relationship with the team. I look forward to continuing our collaboration in years to come.”
Alan Bergman, the chairman of Disney Studios Content, said he, too, was pleased to have resolved the dispute
“I’m very pleased that we have been able to come to a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson regarding ‘Black Widow,'” he said in a statement. “We appreciate her contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and look forward to working together on a number of upcoming projects, including Disney’s ‘Tower of Terror.'”
alleged that Johansson lost out on tens of millions of dollars in box office bonuses.
Disney had fired back in unusually personal terms at the A-list star, accusing her of displaying “callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.” The studio also disclosed that Johansson had been paid $20 million for her work on the project.
CAA co-chairman Bryan Lourd responded that the studio was seeking to “weaponize” his client’s success against her.
“Disney’s direct attack on her character and all else they implied is beneath the company that many of us in the creative community have worked with successfully for decades,” Lourd said at the time.
Disney had sought to force Johansson’s suit into arbitration, arguing that her contract contained a provision requiring that any disputes be settled in private. A hearing on that motion was scheduled for March, however, suggesting that the parties were not eager to fight it out in court.
“Black Widow” was originally set to debut on May 1, 2020, but was postponed several times due to the pandemic. In March 2021, Disney announced that it would be released simultaneously in theaters and via Premier Access on Disney Plus on July 9, allowing subscribers to rent the film for $30. The movie grossed $80 million in theaters in its opening weekend — not bad for the pandemic, but terrible by pre-pandemic Marvel standards.
Disney revealed in a filing in August that “Black Widow” had grossed $125 million on streaming, in addition to its $367 million box office gross.
Johansson argued that the streaming release cannibalized the theatrical gross, and violated her contract. Disney also released “Jungle Cruise” and “Cruella” concurrently in theaters and on Disney Plus.
Warner Bros., which released its entire 2021 slate with the same hybrid model, paid out handsome sums to compensate its stars for lost backend revenue.

Taika Waititi to Direct Disney’s ‘Tower of Terror’
We have learned that Taika Waititi has signed on to direct Disney’s Tower of Terror movie, which has Scarlett Johanson (Black Widow) attached as a producer.
The director boarded the project earlier this year, but when the Johanson v. Disney news surfaced it was unknown what happened to the Tower of Terror project and those involved.
However, Johanson and Disney settled and The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the project was still in the works. What we hear is Waititi is still aboard the project.
Academy Award-winner Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4, Inside Out) has penned the script.
Although details are currently under wraps, the film will be based on the famous and widely popular Walt Disney World attraction of the same name.
As of now, it is unknown if Johanson or Waititi will star in the project.
Disney previously tried its hand at a film about the ride in 1997 with the titular made-for-TV movie. Steve Gutenberg and Kirsten Dunder starred.
Back in 2015, Disney tried launching a Tower of Terror movie with John August (Corpse Bride) writing the script, and Jim Whitaker (Peter Pan and Wendy) producing, but the project ultimately was shelved.

Miraculously, any bad blood between Disney and Johansson has dissipated. The 38-year-old actress remains in business with the studio on the planned “Tower of Terror,” based on its popular theme park ride, with Taika Waititi attached to direct. And she still visits Disney World at least 10 times a year and geeks out when talking about the studio’s movies. The obsession stems from a two-year period when her family lived in Florida. “We had annual passes to Disney World, and I have a real passion for the Disney parks. Also, when I was growing up, it was a great time for Disney animation — ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin’ and ‘Lion King’ with the incredible soundtrack. Like, I will be pre-buying tickets to ‘The Little Mermaid.’ I actually need to text my sister about that,” she says, propping up her image as a cheerleader for movie theaters — even if it seems ridiculous imagining Scarlett Johansson using Fandango like the rest of us.
