Ever since Sam Mendes told Disney he wouldn't direct the Wizard of Oz prequel, Oz, the Great and Powerful, a number of filmmakers have been linked to the project as possible substitutes. Even Guillermo del Toro was rumored to be considered. But now Vulture reports that Sam Raimi has been officially offered the gig, as of Friday morning. If he accepts, the Spider-Man trilogy director would team up with Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., who has long been set to play the titular "wizard" for the origin story, which has been scripted by Mitchell Kapner (The Whole Nine Yards). Disney apparently wants to get this going soon, which makes sense given there are about a billion other Oz-based films in the works at various studios, so it would likely be his next film.
He hasn't signed on yet, but if Raimi heads to Oz, perhaps he won't end up doing The Hobbit, for which he was thought next in line after Del Toro's departure from that prequel. And perhaps he won't end up doing a World of Warcraft movie either. Fine with me, as I'd rather see what a Raimi-directed Oz movie looks like than let the project fall into the hands of other less visionary directors like Adam Shankman and Timur Bekmambetov, both of whom have been candidates. I'd still prefer del Toro, but this could be the next best option. As a fan of the darker sort of L. Frank Baum adaptations, such as Disney's own Return to Oz, I look forward to something along the tone of the Evil Dead movies. And who wouldn't like to see Bruce Campbell as any number of Oz characters? |

Wait... |

| C'est confirmé : Sam Raimi réalisera ! Deadline vient de le confirmer :
Let me confirm that Sam Raimi is set to direct Robert Downey Jr in Disney's extravagant 'Wizard of Oz' 3D prequel. I understand that talks to hire Raimi for Oz: The Great And Powerful turned into a deal last night finalized by CAA. It's a coup for new studio bosses Rich Ross and Sean Bailey, who are rolling the dice big-time by hoping that this pic will be a global hit like the billion-dollar-grossing Alice In Wonderland. Downey will play the Wizard Of Oz before he became the Wizard Of Oz circa the 1939 iconic film: he's in fact a circus wrangler transported by tornado to the mysterious world of Oz where he gets mistaken for a know-it-all. This will be Raimi's first firm project since he exited Spider-Man 4,which prompted Sony Pictures to reboot the entire franchise earlier this year. Now the only question is whether Sam Raimi can do what Tim Burton just did. |

| Bye bye Johnny Depp. Excellent choix. Espérons qu'il soit confirmé !
The latest contender for the Oz throne? James Franco.
The Oscar-nominated host of the Academy Awards is in early talks to star in Oz, the Great and Powerful, Disney’s prequel-ish take on The Wizard of Oz tale being directed by Sam Raimi.
The Oz role has been a hot one since Robert Downey Jr. fell out two and a half weeks ago. Johnny Depp was then in discussions for the role but after several meetings ultimately passed last night.
Franco may be, at first blush, an odd choice to topline the tale of a young illusionist with a grandiose attitude who is forced to flee a traveling circus. His hot air balloon is swept up by a tornado to the land of Oz, which is run by two magical wicked witches.
But from acting pinned to a rock in 127 Hours to a cameo as a drug lord in Green Hornet to his stint on General Hospital, Franco is showing he is not following anyone’s playbook, but his own.
Sources caution that no dealmaking has begun and many issues would need to be ironed out, but if the stars align, Franco would be back working with Raimi for the first time since they collaborated on Sony’s Spider-Man movies. At this stage, Franco hasn't met with Raimi to discuss the project.
While Oz doesn’t have a start or release date, the Joe Roth production is a high priority for the studio, which hopes to start production in the second half of the year.
Franco is repped by CAA. |

Franco's CAA reps and Disney have closed his deal to play the title role in Oz: The Great and Powerful. That puts the film on track to begin production in July, with Franco reuniting with his Spider-Man director Sam Raimi in the prequel to the L. Frank Baum novel that was scripted by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire. Joe Roth is producing.
There had been much discussion around town lately about Disney's gyrations in trying to pare the budget of the film down to a mere $200 million, but they must have figured it out if they locked in Franco. For Franco, the multi-tasking marvel's dance card for 2011 now looks like this: he'll first star in the Noah Baumbach-directed While We're Young, and then will shoot Oz. (...) Oz is a major piece of business for Disney, and joins the parade of revisionist fairy tales and classic kid stories that started with Disney's billion dollar grossing Alice in Wonderland, and continues with CBS Films' Beastly with Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens and the Catherine Hardwicke-directed Amanda Seyfried-starrer Red Riding Hood from Warner Bros. |

| Excellente nouvelle relayée par le Hollywood Reporter. Rachel Weisz pourrait faire partie du casting.
Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz is in negotiations to play the villainess in Oz: The Great and Powerful, Disney’s prequel-ish take on The Wizard of Oz tale that stars James Franco and Mila Kunis and is being directed by Sam Raimi.
The movie stars Franco as Oz, a snake oil salesman who finds himself dealing with real magic when his balloon carries him into a fabled land and he runs into genuine witches.
Weisz would play Evanora, a powerful, evil witch who intends to rule the land. She is the sister of Theadora (Kunis) and tries to seduce her to the dark side.
The role would be a change of pace for Weisz, who — despite an eclectic resume ranging from her Oscar-winning work in The Constant Gardener to Wong Kar Wai’s My Blueberry Nights to The Mummy — has never worked on a project of this scale and never tackled what is sure to be a splashy role.
She is repped by CAA. |

| On connaît enfin la date de sortie :
Disney has set a release date for 3D event pic Oz: The Great and Powerful: March 8, 2013.
Directed by Sam Raimi, Oz is a prequel to the classic movie The Wizard of Oz.
Oz stars James Franco as a young circus magician whose hot air balloon is transported to the land of Oz, where he becomes he becomes the wizard. Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire penned the script. Mila Kunis is set to star as one of the two magical witches who control Oz.
Joe Roth is producing Oz, and is hoping to replicate the success of Alice in Wonderland, which grossed north of $1 billion at the worldwide box office for Disney and Roth. (THR) |

Wait and see comme dirait l'autre. Par contre, ARF encore de la 3D... |
