Dans ses Pas [Walt Disney - 2021]

Le prochain court-métrage des Walt Disney Animation Studios se nommera Far From The Tree et sera présenté en avant-première au Festival d'Annecy avant d'être diffusé dans les salles en fin d'année en prélude à Encanto.


Natalie Nourigat (Programme d'échange) réalisera le court-métrage. L'histoire sera sur un jeune raton laveur curieux et sur ses parents très protecteurs.

Savez-vous pourquoi nous n'avons pas droit à la diffusion du court-métrage avant le film Encanto dans certains cinémas ? Mon Gaumont ne l'a pas diffusé, je trouve ça dommage...

Je suis ami avec le directeur du cinéma en question, je lui demanderai la raison de l'absence du court-métrage avant le film mais à mon avis c'est une question d'argent...

EDIT : Je viens de demander à mon pote qui tient le ciné et il était pas au courant qu'il y avait un court-métrage avant Encanto. Il a demandé à son projectionniste qui n'était pas au courant non plus. C'est parce que je lui en ai parlé que du coup il a appelé ceux qui lui envoient les films. Il n'arrivait pas à remettre la main dessus alors que techniquement le court-métrage était sensé arriver en même temps que le film...

Je l'ai vu deux fois et, à chaque fois, j'ai eu l'impression de passer totalement à côté.
J'ai trouvé les thèmes vus et revus. C'est mignon mais ce type de cartoon muet avec un personnage naïf qui essaie de faire comme un autre, j'ai l'impression qu'on en a pas mal bouffé.
L'autre point problématique pour moi est l'animation limitée et très saccadée. Je peux entendre que ce soit un choix créatif mais j'y vois plutôt là un manque de moyen et une preuve supplémentaire que les Walt Disney Animation Studios ne savent plus faire de belle 2D.
En tout cas, je veux bien que les spectateurs se disent que c'est mignon mais quand on passe de ça à Encanto, la Fantastique Famille Madrigal juste derrière, je doute que beaucoup regrettent la 2D et se disent qu'ils auraient aimé que toute leur séance soit présentée avec cette technique.

Dans ses Pas sera disponible sur Disney+ le 24 Décembre en même temps que Encanto.
Mystère par contre concernant la France.

Vu lors d'une des projections PA de Disneyland Paris car lors de mes deux séances au cinéma, il n'était pas proposé.
Ça se regarde une fois, c'est mignon mais trop souvent vu. Sans inspiration et originalité côté histoire et animation.

C’est triste de lire ça … une entreprise qui était a une époque être à la pointe, la référence dans le domaine de l’animation ne sait plus faire de l’animation traditionnelle… pourtant il doit bien resté des animateurs de la « grande époque » non où ils ont tous été remplacés ?
Ça fait bien longtemps que je n’attends plus grand chose de l’Amérique ou de l’Europe question 2D. Seuls les japonais semblent ne pas avoir cédé à la 3d qui reste minoritaire la bas.

Dans ses pas est dans la lignée de Paperman et Le festin : c'est principalement de la 3D stylisée de manière à ressembler à de la 2D.
Beaucoup pensent que le court-métrage est en animation traditionnelle. L'objectif de Disney Animation semble donc être atteint.

On a vu que ces techniques expérimentées sur des courts-métrages ont par la suite été utilisées dans les long-métrages (à petite échelle certes), notamment pour quelques scènes de Raya et le Dernier Dragon. Je trouve cela vraiment enthousiasmant pour les projets à venir, films comme séries. Si l'animation traditionnelle revient, ces techniques hybrides peuvent ouvrir de nombreuses possibilités et améliorer celles déjà existantes depuis des années. L'animation traditionnelle a déjà utilisé des éléments 3D par le passé, que ce soit des personnages, des objets ou des décors, mais leurs incrustations à l'image avec le reste n'était pas aussi toujours aussi maitrisée que ce qui est possible désormais.

I was honestly really thankful to have been given the chance to make the colour script for the short. I’ve never made one before (and am usually too scared to paint when there are way more qualified artists to do it) but @tallychyck gave me a chance and @dethancooper_art guided me through the process. I still have a long way to go, but I was proud of it .

For students, the idea behind this was to capture both the mood and the light of the Pacific Northwest area…. Starting off neutral sunlight/ complimentary shadows, then darker and cooler to feel more foreboding… and finally beautiful twilight towards the end…

In Disney’s Far From the Tree, the characters are CG animated, but the backgrounds are painted in a more traditional manner. Here’s a simple behind-the-scenes look at a typical shot.

1) I begin the background painting by using traditional marker and pencil on photo paper based on a simple modeled layout and camera setup defined by the incredibly versatile @joabaldwin (see step 2). Once I’m happy with the marker sketch I scan and assemble the pieces in photoshop until arriving at the final background painting. I also draw/paint the characters in place to visually explain to downstream departments how they should appear in the shot.

2) @joabaldwin then updates the rough 3D model to match the final painting, which then becomes the foundation for the placement of the characters for animation, and also because we need it to make the film work in stereo (3D)!
.
3) The CG animation team (led by the brilliant @chadsellz) creates the tear jerking and/or hilarious character performance. The characters are then rendered flat and receive a visual treatment (lines, shadows, eye specs) to make them “appear” 2d animated (this was a technique I originally developed for a short circuit project - Exchange Student, also directed by @tallychyck, more on that in a future post). Finally, the Lighting team (led by the innovative @rogerlee.art) integrates the characters with the background and adds the finishing artistic touches (reflections, water movement, caustics, dynamic shadows), to make the shot sing! This was actually one of the dozen or so shots I also lit for the film.

Far From the Tree was a labor of love for all who worked on it and I couldn’t be more proud of the team and the final result. Enjoy the film in theaters with Encanto!

3) Scanned pencil and copic marker drawing/painting of the tree element done on real paper to match the rough model … I had to paint many elements like this in separate pieces in order for the 3d and camera moves to work!

4- Cutting out and assembling the scanned pieces in photoshop!

9) The final shot from the film, first animated in cg by @bhomman, then with the 2d character look technique and dappled lighting applied by the incredible lighting team!

Since the paintings are used as the actual backgrounds for the final shots I also draw/paint the characters in place (original character designs by the brilliant @jamwoods_) to guide downstream departments, including lighting, for which these also served as the lighting keys.

The backgrounds are a bit larger than they will appear in the final shots (note the red and blue lines in the bottom two paintings) to allow for flexibility later on (for example if we decide to adjust the framing of the shot, or need to perform a simple camera move). Enjoy!

2) This shot has a slight camera push-in, so I had to paint the trees, sky, and haystack rock (beloved icon of the Oregon coast!) as separate layers. The painted clouds and water were elegantly animated using Nuke by the incredible lighting team (led by @rogerlee.art), so I paint them as separate layers as well.
.
3) I draw/paint the characters in place to communicate to downstream departments how they should appear in the shot. This also serves as the lighting key for the lighting team.
.
4) The final painting in layers with the additional trees (which will also be subtly animated by lighting to match the camera push-in).
