A mon avis .

Natacha Rafalski: Disneyland Paris’ immersive €2bn transformation

“We are entering a new era of immersive storytelling“

Natacha Rafalski is présidente of Disneyland Paris, Europe’s leading tourist destination with more than 375 million visits since it opened in the early 1990s. She leads a team of more than 18,000 employees and oversees two theme parks with 59 attractions, seven themed hotels, two convention centres, and the Disney Village entertainment complex.

“I want to start with my mom, who was really my inspiration in terms of wanting to work for Disney,” Rafalski tells blooloop. “I’m half French and half American and grew up in France. When I went to college in the US, my mom worked at Disneyland Paris for a couple of years before the opening. I was invited to attend the opening day with her. I also got to sleep at Disneyland Hotel the night before. It was such an unforgettable experience. This memory holds a very special place in my heart.”

A Disney veteran, Rafalski has worked her way up at Disneyland Paris after serving as CFO and senior VP of business strategy and finance. Before this, she was CFO for the Walt Disney Company in Greater China between 2013 and 2017. She played a key role in the Shanghai Disney Resort negotiations, specifically the capital structure for Shanghai Disneyland.

“I interned at Disney in corporate treasury during business school in California, then was hired officially in 1995. I spent 19 years in corporate finance. Notably, I worked on the financial and capital structure for Shanghai Disney Resort. I was involved in negotiations, travelling between LA and Shanghai every couple of weeks,” she says.

Europe’s leading tourist destination
“After 19 years, I wanted to explore new opportunities. So, I transitioned to the role of CFO for Walt Disney International in greater China in 2013, handling all of the businesses except theme parks. Four years later, I was asked to become CFO of Disneyland Paris. I was very excited to return to France and shift to the parks business. Since then, I have had the pleasure of overseeing Disneyland Paris with the support of an amazing team of leaders and colleagues, first as CFO and now as présidente.

Rafalski is leading a €2 billion expansion plan for Walt Disney Studios Park. This is set to become Disney Adventure World when the new World of Frozen land opens in 2026, as announced at Disney’s D23 fan event this year. The park, which opened in 2002, is nearly doubling in size.

“We are in the midst of an unprecedented transformation across Disneyland Paris, truly on a scale we have never seen before. Walt Disney Studios Park will be the crown jewel of that transformation, which is coming to fruition thanks to a €2bn investment,” Rafalski says.

Transforming Disneyland Paris
“We’re overhauling more than 90 percent of the park. We will roughly double its footprint when the work is done, including a new creative vision that will echo in every space. Beyond that, we also have a multi-year transformation of Disney Village underway. This extends to our dining, shopping and the overall look and feel of the entire area.

“We have already accomplished so much in recent years, notably the refurbishment of Sleeping Beauty Castle and refreshing many attractions, reopening first Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel in 2021 and Disneyland Hotel in January, introducing innovative new entertainment offerings and more. We are entering a new era of immersive storytelling and unforgettable experiences.”

The transformation comes as the original concept for the park evolves to focus on immersive worlds. Worlds of Pixar joined Walt Disney Studios Park in 2021. This was followed by Avengers Campus in 2022. Both of these lands will be joined by the upcoming Frozen-themed land. There will also be a new attraction and immersive area inspired by The Lion King (1994).

“Disney Adventure World will be the culmination of an ambitious creative vision, evolving from what we call ‘how it’s done’ soundstages to celebratory theatres and adventures that come to life in immersive areas. The park concept has continued to evolve – we’ve been adding large-scale, immersive projects since 2007 – and this will really be the next big leap,” says Rafalski.

“The official name change will take place when World of Frozen opens. The spirit of this transformation is already taking shape following the opening of Worlds of Pixar and Avengers Campus.”

Disney Adventure World’s immersive lands
The park will update its entrance area as part of the rebrand. Walt Disney Imagineering is already working to transform the former central square into a new environment.

“In spring 2025, that creative vision will reach the park’s entrance when our entrance building reopens as World Premiere, inviting guests into a glamorous film premiere in the heart of Hollywood before arriving in the full splendour of the park. Then with World of Frozen will also come Adventure Bay and lush gardens themed to favourite Disney stories, among other experiences,” says Rafalski.

As above, World of Frozen will be located by Adventure Bay, a 70,000-square-metre body of water that will serve as a unique stage for state-of-the-art entertainment. The new land is taking shape at Disneyland Paris, as seen in a 2023 video released by Imagineering.

Bringing favourite stories to life
Rafalski says:

“I can now confirm that we will be welcoming guests into the highly-anticipated World of Frozen starting in 2026. We are well advanced in bringing the kingdom of Arendelle to life, including the iconic North Mountain. This can already be seen rising in the distance. Our guests will soon be able to immerse themselves like never before in this powerful storytelling that has become so beloved around the world. We can’t wait to ‘open up the gates’.”

The World of Frozen land includes Elsa’s Ice Palace, standing atop the snow-covered North Mountain. The surrounding village features Norwegian-style architecture, as well as a shop and restaurant with views of the lake. The land’s promenade will offer green walkways and themed gardens. Additionally, visitors will get to meet their favourite Frozen characters.

The world’s first Frozen land opened at Hong Kong Disneyland in November 2023. Visitors are immersed in the kingdom of Arendelle and Nordic culture through rides, attractions, retail outlets and F&B.

World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris
“The World of Frozen will feature a new attraction that takes guests on a journey alongside Anna and Elsa, as well as immersive dining, shopping and a chance to enjoy a memorable royal audience with the two sisters. We will share more details about each experience in the new land as we get closer to opening day.”

At Hong Kong Disneyland, Frozen Ever After is a boat ride that takes visitors through the North Mountain. Here, they see Elsa’s Ice Palace and witness her magical powers. The ride features Imagineering’s state-of-the-art audio-animatronics technology to bring Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven to life.

Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs is a family coaster that sends guests zooming across hills, through caves, and over fjord waters. Meanwhile, Playhouse in the Woods is a unique and interactive show. It features Anna, Elsa, and Olaf, as well as projection-mapped content, special effects, and sensory elements.

In addition to these new attractions, guests can visit the King Agnarr Bridge, as well as the village, castle, forest, and bay of Arendelle. Highlights also include a snowflake-shaped ice sculpture created by Elsa at Friendship Fountain, face-painting at Traveling Traders, and snacks at the Forest Fare cart. Located in Arendelle village is Clock Tower Square, which offers views of the Clock Tower seen in Frozen.

NewTangled attraction
As for new retail and F&B at the Hong Kong park, Nordic-inspired cuisine, from seafood stew to classic meatballs, is on offer at the Golden Crocus Inn. Desserts can be found at Northern Delights, and souvenirs and wooden toys can be purchased at Tick Tock Toys & Collectibles.

Tokyo DisneySea’s eighth themed port, Fantasy Springs, also contains a Frozen area called Frozen Kingdom. This includes a boat ride called Anna and Elsa’s Frozen Journey featuring songs from the film, and F&B outlets named the Royal Banquet of Arendelle and Oaken’s OK Foods.

But back to Disneyland Paris. To access the immersive lands at the new Disney Adventure World park, guests will walk along Adventure Way. Here, they will discover Raiponce Tangled Spin, a new attraction inspired by the Disney Animation movie Tangled (2010).

“We’re excited to be bringing the beloved Disney Animation film, Tangled, to life in Walt Disney Studios Park with its very own attraction nestled in the new gardens that we’re creating for our guests. Raiponce Tangled Spin will be an all-new, family-friendly attraction centred around the floating lanterns scene that has become such an iconic reference to the film. I can’t share more information at this point. But I can tell you that we’re making great progress on the attraction. We will reveal more as soon as we can.”

Disney parks across the globe are introducing new experiences. Shanghai Disneyland recently debuted its new Zootopia land. Disneyland in California is developing new experiences inspired by Marvel, the Avatar franchise, and Coco. At Walt Disney World in Florida, the company is creating new lands and attractions based on villains, Monsters, Inc., Encanto and Indiana Jones.

The Lion King at a Disney park
As we now know from D23, Disneyland Paris will be the first Disney park to get an attraction and immersive area themed to The Lion King. Rafalski says this is “one of the most iconic Disney films of all time.”

“This larger-than-life area will bring guests on a journey through the African savanna to enjoy the adventures of their favourite characters from the film. Pride Rock will be the gateway to an adventure-filled water attraction, in addition to themed dining and shopping for the young and young at heart. I can’t tell you how excited I am to see what our Imagineers dream up,” she adds.

The new Lion King experiences will open after the launch of World of Frozen. Guests will travel through the African savanna and immerse themselves in the adventures of characters like Simba, Pumbaa and Timon. Also, there will be character greetings and new dining and retail offerings in the new area.

Disney Imagineers will bring to life the film’s Pride Rock. This will serve as the entrance to a water attraction – Disney’s first-ever ride-through attraction inspired by The Lion King. Disneyland Paris said the ride “will plunge guests beneath the rock to follow Simba on his journey from cub to king, in a retelling of the story from the classic animated feature film”.

Construction will start soon
Construction on the theme park’s new area will start next year. Imagineers are now designing innovative experiences for it, including state-of-the-art audio-animatronics for the water attraction.

Disneyland Park is the flagship property at Disneyland Paris. It is home to iconic attractions like Big Thunder Mountain, Phantom Manor and Pirates of the Caribbean. Its five themed lands are Disney parks classics such as Fantasyland and Adventureland. This park is getting a new show in the coming years.

“To add to an already incredible lineup of experiences in the coming years, we have also announced the arrival of two brand new nighttime spectaculars. One will light up Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park starting in January 2025. And a new lake show will premiere at Disney Adventure World in 2026,” says Rafalski.

“Both promise to be immersive, exciting and heartwarming for our guests. They will combine music, projections, drones and other special effects for an unparalleled experience.”

Aside from the exciting new experiences at its parks, Disneyland Paris is making sustainability a top priority. Europe’s largest solar canopy plant will soon be complete at the resort, and many recycling initiatives are in place. Also, Disneyland Paris is testing agro-digesters to turn food waste into water for plants.

Prioritising sustainability at Disneyland Paris
“Indeed, we brought to life several large-scale projects over the past few years to significantly reduce our environmental footprint. Our solar canopy plant, located over our main guest parking lot, is an excellent example. Completed in late 2023, it is the largest in Europe, with more than 80,000 panels.”

Now fully operational, the plant produces 36 GWh/year. This is equivalent to the energy consumption of a town of 17,400 people. It also reduces the greenhouse gas emissions in the surrounding area by about 890 tonnes of CO2 per year.

“While we continue to make strides in regards to our emissions, water use, recycling and biodiversity, we have recently announced the installation of a thermo-refrigerating pump. This project will contribute to further reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 9 percent. It will also reduce our heating needs by 10 percent and our gas consumption by 14 percent. Needless to say, sustainability is one of our top priorities.”

Looking to the future
What’s next for the burgeoning French resort?

“We have such an incredible opportunity for growth in the coming years to deliver even more surprises for our guests. Our focus for the future is really on telling more stories, in more ways, with creativity and innovation, thanks to the talent of our teams at Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Imagineering, as well as the savoir-faire of specialized artisans who we work with regularly locally, across France and Europe,” Rafalski says.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our 18,000 cast members who bring the magic to life for our guests every single day. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us.”
