Halloween Covid scare forces Shanghai Disney into lockdown as China steps up efforts to eradicate virus
Health workers in hazmat suits are not typically among the cast of characters featured at Shanghai Disneyland's Halloween party.
That was until this year, when a single confirmed case sent the park, and its adjacent shopping district, Disneytown, into a snap lockdown Sunday evening.
The extreme measure saw tens of thousands of visitors and staff forced to undergo coronavirus testing before they were allowed to leave the park, as police blocked the exits and secured the grounds.
The surreal juxtaposition of an impromptu mass testing drive and a Disney fireworks show is the latest example of how China's stringent zero-Covid policy has permeated every corner of Chinese citizens' lives.
In its public statement, Shanghai Disney did not offer detailed reasons for the shutdown, only saying it was to "cooperate with the pandemic investigation in other provinces and cities."
But a local health commission in the neighboring province of Jiangsu said a woman who visited Shanghai Disney on Saturday tested positive for Covid-19.
The woman had taken a train to Shanghai from Jiangxi province on Friday. During her return trip the next day, she was found to be a close contact of a confirmed case in Jiangxi and taken off the train for quarantine. She tested positive on Sunday and had a fever, and was diagnosed as a confirmed case, according to the municipal government of Hangzhou, where the woman alighted.
As of Monday morning, 33,863 people who were at Shanghai Disneyland and Disneytown over the weekend had been tested, and all results came back negative, according to the Shanghai government. But state media said about 100,000 people had visited the park at the weekend, citing sources.
Both Disneyland and Disneytown will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday "in order to follow the requirement of Covid-19 prevention and control," the resort said in the statement. The subway station connected to Disney has also been closed until further notice.
While the park's shutdown over a single case would likely be considered extreme by most people outside of China, many Chinese internet users have praised the Shanghai government and Disney for what they see as a lenient, targeted and effective response.
The tests were well organized and conducted swiftly, and visitors were allowed to return home or to their hotels, instead of being taken into centralized quarantine. They are required to self-isolate and undergo another Covid test 24 hours after leaving the park. If that test is also negative, visitors will be asked to observe 12 days of health-monitoring and take more tests -- but they won't be confined to their homes or hotel rooms.

“Our Magic Passport has proven to be one of the most popular items among our guests, as it provides a unique interactive experience and becomes a collectible souvenir,” said Joe Schott, President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort. “The extended collaboration with Invengo will allow us to explore more creative solutions, leveraging Invengo’s advanced technology in radio-frequency identification (RFID), making each and every guest’s visit more magical.”
Medallion machines are one of the guest-favorite traditions at Disney Parks. Themed to the attractions and experiences in each location, the five new medallion machines will be installed at Mickey Avenue, Tomorrowland and Disney·Pixar Toy Story Land in Shanghai Disneyland, and Disneytown. Magical Mementos available at the machines also will be themed to each location, featuring beloved Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and his Pals, the Avengers, Toy Story friends, and the one and only Enchanted Storybook Castle at Shanghai Disneyland. When these medallion machines come into service this summer, guests will have another sparkling interactive experience and unique souvenir opportunity as they adventure at Shanghai Disney Resort.
As one of the leading suppliers of RFID products and solutions, Invengo has been the exclusive provider of the Shanghai Disney Resort Magic Passport since day one, with more than ten million stamps imprinted in guests’ Magic Passports over the past six years. With the launch of these new Magical Mementos, guests and fans will soon have the option to bring home their special memories, created and shared at Shanghai Disney Resorts.
“We have enjoyed a great collaboration with Shanghai Disney Resort and it’s exciting to see that this relationship is being extended and expanded,” said Tony Xu, Director & General Manager of Invengo. “We hope that through the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, Invengo can continue to provide guests and fans with online and offline integrated recreational experience services, creating more immersive, interactive and unforgettable experiences.”

In celebration of the “2022 Shanghai Pudong Double Five Shopping Festival,” Shanghai Disney Resort began trial operations today of a new Shanghai Disneyland Official Flagship Store on Tmall. As the resort’s first online shopping destination, this convenient new online store will expand the magic of Shanghai Disneyland’s unique retail selection beyond the resort, offering a complete multichannel shopping experience. Select products will be available for purchase during the trial operations period. The resort also announced it will expand its holistic shopping experience by introducing a “Special Merchandise Exclusive Draw,” a newly designed in-park shopping program for highly popular and in-demand items. These exciting new shopping experiences follow the official opening this week of the Disney Home Store, a specialty shop located at Disneytown.
“We are very appreciative of our passionate guests and fans for their strong affinity for Shanghai Disney Resort, and their lasting love for our experiences and products,” said Joe Schott, President and General Manager of Shanghai Disney Resort. “We continue to leverage new technologies and platforms to further elevate the guest shopping experience. The opening of our new flagship store on Tmall, and introduction of additional online and offline shopping experiences will provide guests and fans with even more products and convenient shopping options.”
The Shanghai Disneyland Official Flagship Store on Tmall, an official sponsor of the resort, offers an appealing assortment of merchandise for guests across a broad range of categories including plush, fashion, accessories, toys, souvenirs, home décor and more. During the trial operations stage, guests will be able to select items for purchase from the popular Summer Mickey’s Pool Party Collection and Chip ‘n’ Dale Car Accessories Collection, otherwise exclusively found at the resort, and enjoy a playful selection of merchandise items. The selection of products available for purchase will expand rapidly after the official opening of the store later this summer, entertaining and delighting guests of all ages.
Building upon Disney’s extraordinary storytelling and innovation, the online store also integrates the physical and digital realms to help guests experience the all-around magic of Shanghai Disney Resort. Before their resort visit begins, guests will be able to find valuable information to make their visit even more convenient, engaging and enjoyable. Guests preparing to commemorate an unforgettable visit to the resort will find a wide range of stylish outfits and merchandise items to create their signature new look. Shanghai Disney Resort continues to explore innovative and enhanced shopping experiences to meet diversified guest needs. While guests and fans near and far will now have access to Shanghai Disney Resort’s merchandise items through the new Shanghai Disneyland Official Flagship Store, the resort is also debuting a technology-based sales program tailored for all guests visiting Shanghai Disneyland – the “Special Merchandise Exclusive Draw.” The program is exclusively designed for in-demand products, providing more opportunities for park guests to purchase their favorite products and bring the memories of their park visit home.
The new “Special Merchandise Exclusive Draw” will begin trial operations on August 15. Available on Shanghai Disney Resort’s official app, guests entering Shanghai Disneyland and participating in the drawing by bundling their park tickets with the app at any time prior to 18:00 will enjoy an equal opportunity to enter a daily drawing to win an in-park purchase voucher for some of the resort’s special merchandise collections. Within a designated timeslot on the winning day, voucher winners will have access to purchase select merchandise products in Wandering Moon Restaurant located at the Gardens of Imagination in Shanghai Disneyland. All voucher winners of the day will have access to purchase from the same product throughout the day, irrespective of the time they are assigned to enter the store. Each eligible guest can participate in the drawing once per day, with purchase limits applied for each product per guest. Products will be sold seasonally subject to the resort’s sales plans, and guests must be in the park and complete their purchase on the day of their park visit before leaving. The new program is designed to further elevate guest comfort and convenience by providing guests an equal chance to enter the store and purchase highly popular products on any given day – there is no need to arrive at the park early to shop for these products! – and at the same time to support on-site pandemic prevention and control measures.
Immersive shopping environments will continue to be an irreplaceable experience during a visit to Shanghai Disney Resort. The resort has further enhanced this experience with the Disney Home Store, a brand new two-story store that officially opened on August 8 in Disneytown. Disney Home Store, the first-ever home specialty store for a Disney resort in China, provides a complete and up-to-date inventory of furnishings, tableware, loungewear, apparel, decorative pieces, gifts, plush and more, allowing guests to decorate every corner of their home with treasured Disney stories and memories. To celebrate the opening, the store sees the debut of the brand new StellaLou’s Dreamy Home Collection and Duffy’s Cuddly Home Collection. Fast on its way to becoming one of the resort’s iconic shopping destinations, the beautifully appointed store will also immerse guests in Disney’s signature storytelling as they explore a unique shopping experience and discover even more unforgettable moments of magic.

* “Regular” price of admission to Shanghai Disneyland, covering most of the weekdays and selected weekends, is set at 475 RMB (actuellement 435 RMB)
* “Regular Plus” price of admission will cover selected weekends and selected weekdays, and is set at 599 RMB (actuellement 545 RMB)
* “Peak” price of admission, which covers most of the days in summer season, selected Chinese statutory holiday periods (including their shoulder days), internationally recognized celebration periods, park special event days, and other peak visitation days, is set at 719 RM (actuellement 659 RMB)

Infants (under the age of 3 years old or with a height of 1.0 meter and below) will continue to receive free admission. Shanghai Disneyland will continue to offer the pricing calendar on a rolling 30-day basis to allow sufficient time for guests to make choice and plan their trip to the park.
As Shanghai Disney Resort continues to develop more innovative products and optimize ticketing offerings since its opening to better reflect local consumer visitation habits, the four-tiered pricing structure has supported the resort to more effectively spread visitation throughout the year based on attendance forecast and maximize guest experience.
One ticket to Shanghai Disneyland provides admission and access to all of the attractions and entertainment at the seven themed lands inside the theme park (except for special services, facilities and events that require a separate charge).
A Shanghai Disneyland Annual Pass will remain to be one of the most cost-effective ways for guests to enjoy the theme park. A Shanghai Disneyland Annual Pass, based on the different pass types, allows the pass holder to enjoy multiple visits to Shanghai Disneyland throughout a year, along with invitations to special events and parties, Disney character experiences, and discounts on many park exclusive offerings.
