AdventHealth Renewed Alliance with Walt Disney World Is Producing Results
Adventist health care organization breaks ground on emergency room inside the park.
AdventHealth broke ground on its emergency room (ER) located at Flamingo Crossings Town Center in Winter Garden, Florida, United States, on March 8, 2022. The new facilities will bring emergency care and an enhanced patient experience to Walt Disney World Resort guests, cast members, and the Central Florida community, leaders said.
To commemorate this important milestone in the renewed alliance between AdventHealth and Walt Disney World Resort, a very special guest — Mickey Mouse — participated in the ceremony. During the event, AdventHealth and Disney sealed a time capsule containing items that tell the history of the alliance, as well as mementos from The World’s Most Magical Celebration, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort.
“We are pleased to break ground on this unique and innovative facility, which will provide convenient, whole-person care for Central Floridians and visitors alike,” Doug Harcombe, CEO of AdventHealth Celebration and the Osceola market, said. “We’re combining what AdventHealth and Disney each do best: providing exceptional clinical care and designing an experience that delivers a calming environment with touches of Disney’s storytelling.”
The emergency room, located at the western gateway to Walt Disney World Resort, will be staffed by a comprehensive clinical team including board-certified emergency physicians and emergency nurses. The design of the facility and team member training will bring an enhanced patient experience for those who need emergency care.

The ER’s design and patient experience will be unique in the AdventHealth network, with Key West, Florida-influenced architecture and Disney-inspired touches to enhance the patient experience.
The approximately 19,000-square-foot (about 1770-square-meter) facility will have 24 private patient rooms (including pediatric-friendly rooms to make ER visits less stressful for young patients); respiratory therapy; diagnostic imaging including CT scans, X-ray, and ultrasound; and a full-service laboratory.
Under a renewed alliance announced in 2021, AdventHealth became the Official Health Care Provider at Walt Disney World Resort, as well as the Official Virtual Health Care Provider at Walt Disney World Resort. The renewed alliance builds upon more than two decades of relationship between the two organizations.
AdventHealth will also provide a diverse range of health care services and vacation planning tools to Walt Disney World Resort guests with health care needs ranging from the common cold to a chronic illness, both before and during their trips, through the AdventHealth World of Wellness.
“AdventHealth ER at Flamingo Crossings Town Center will offer emergency care and services for Disney guests, Disney cast, and local residents, delivered by the Official Health Care Provider of Walt Disney World Resort,” Rachel Hutter, Disney senior vice president of Worldwide Safety and Health, said.
AdventHealth ER at Flamingo Crossings Town Center is expected to open in 2023. The architect is HuntonBrady Architects, and the general contractor is Batson-Cook.

Disney World Earmarks 80 Acres for Affordable Housing
For more than 50 years, our Central Florida family has played an important role in the story of Walt Disney World. As Disney cast members, it is our home, it’s where we work, it’s where we play and it’s where we grow. And at Disney, we’re always looking for innovative ways to make our community stronger.
Today, we’re taking a big step forward in these efforts: Walt Disney World is earmarking nearly 80 acres of our land for a new affordable housing development – right here in Central Florida. This initiative has been in the works for a while as we’ve been focused on finding solutions to this challenge for quite some time. I am thrilled that we can finally share this news with our cast members and neighbors.
“We are invested in working together with our community to solve complex issues,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “The lack of affordable housing is affecting many people across our country, including right here in Central Florida. With this initiative, we’re lending a hand to make a real and meaningful impact in our community by tapping into the best of our company’s strengths. This is the right opportunity and the right time to take action.”
The development, which is expected to include more than 1,300 units, will be constructed by a third-party affordable housing developer and will be located on Disney’s land in southwest Orange County, Florida. It will offer Central Florida residents a variety of home choices that are affordable and attainable, in a great part of town near schools and the new and expanding Flamingo Crossings Town Center retail and dining complex. The development will be available for qualifying applicants in our region, including Disney cast members.
Many of you know us for our incredible theme parks and resort hotels around the world, and we will engage the developer to bring that same innovation, expertise and attention to detail to this initiative.
And the work doesn’t stop here: several years ago, Disneyland Resort led an effort to revitalize the Orange County Housing Trust that provides “last mile” funding for affordable housing projects in Anaheim. This made the Buena Esperanza project — a converted studio apartment community for veterans and homeless individuals with mental illness — a reality. In addition to providing them a place to live, the community offers job placement and mental health and wellness support to residents. As a result of Disney’s investment a second project, Finamore Place, in Anaheim is under construction with an expected completion date of early summer 2022. It will provide over 100 additional housing units. Disneyland Resort will continue to show support for these and other such worthy endeavors.
We’ve also spent years investing in local nonprofits on the front lines of important causes in our community like affordable housing – through hundreds of millions of dollars in donations, the Disney VoluntEARS program, contributions to local food banks and more. Just a few months ago, Walt Disney World donated $3 million to some of these very same organizations. I can’t share much more than that right now, but keep an eye out for more details as we work together with community leaders and a prominent developer in affordable housing to bring this initiative to life in the months and years ahead. Walt Disney World Announces Location, Developer for Affordable and Attainable Housing Initiative
Earlier this year, we first told you about our plans to contribute nearly 80 acres of land for a new affordable housing development. It’s a project that has been near and dear to our hearts, as we know how important it is to find solutions to this important challenge facing communities all around the country, including here in Central Florida. Today, we’re sharing more details and giving you a sneak peek at what we’ve been working on!
First, let me tell you a little bit about where the development will be located. The land we’ve contributed for this initiative is in a great spot west of State Road 429, just a few miles away from the Magic Kingdom, near schools and shopping, including Flamingo Crossings Town Center. The development is expected to include more than 1,300 units.
We’re also excited to reveal who we’ve chosen to build, own and operate the property: The Michaels Organization, a prominent and visionary developer known for creating high-quality homes in communities in many states, including Florida.
The development is expected to be privately financed and limited to applicants within a certain income range.
“For more than 50 years, Walt Disney World has cared for and invested in our community, and we’re committed to being a part of this solution which will bring more attainable housing to Central Florida,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “We will continue to find ways to use our resources to make a difference in the community we call home, and we’re excited to take this step with a nationally recognized developer.”
After a thorough search, we chose The Michaels Organization for its long-standing track record in building and managing attainable housing communities. Negotiations between Walt Disney World and The Michaels Organization on a definitive agreement for the initiative are underway. The development will be open for qualifying applicants, including Disney cast members.
“We are excited to work with an iconic brand like Disney to deliver attainable housing for the Central Florida community,” said Michaels CEO John J. O’Donnell. “Our goal is to create a repeatable model that we hope will inspire other companies and municipalities to create high quality, attainable housing in their own communities.”
This initiative will help offer a viable solution to one of the nation’s greatest challenges and will support and build upon Orange County’s Housing for All action plan to address housing affordability for local residents, an action plan brought about by the passion and leadership of Mayor Jerry Demings.
Attainable housing is one of many ways Disney engages with local leaders to help the community find lasting solutions to this issue, from donations, to supplies to our Disney VoluntEARS program and more. You may remember that, earlier this year, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort donated $300K to local food banks to support people in the community facing food insecurity. That donation was part of the $5.5M Walt Disney World has contributed to important community causes during the ongoing 50th Anniversary celebration, including organizations on the frontline of addressing the need for affordable housing.

More details were given about the proposed 1,410 unit community, which would include 1,000 units of “affordable” housing for people making between 30% and 100% of the area median income and would not be limited to Disney cast members.
The community will be spread across more than 70 acres and be divided into six “neighborhoods,” each with a distinct feel. Two activity centers will service the units, along with a transportation hub for buses and rideshares.
20 acres of open space will surround the buildings, providing opportunities to bike, walk and enjoy fresh air.
If approved by the county and the state, the developer, The Michaels Organization, expects to break ground in the fall and have the first units online in 2026. The project will take four to five years to complete, a spokesman said.
However, neighbors of the project are vehemently opposed to it, citing traffic and overcrowding concerns as infrastructure struggles to keep up with the rapidly growing Horizon West region.

Renderings show some of the affordable housing units Disney hopes to build on vacant land west of the Magic Kingdom theme park, just south of the Horizon West community.
"We are working very thoughtfully alongside a prominent developer to create a place that strengthens the surrounding area while making a real difference in people's lives for years to come," said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, Walt Disney World director of external affairs.
The project would build more than 1,400 units of affordable housing. Most would be one and two-bedroom apartments, with some larger townhome-style homes with up to four bedrooms. The smallest apartments would be less than 600 square feet, the largest being about 1,900 square feet.
Many people living in nearby Horizon West opposed the plan, warning of lower property values, rising crime, and more traffic.
Six hôtels sont actuellement en activité : Residence Inn by Marriott (groupe Marriott), Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites (groupe Marriott), Homewoods Suites (groupe Hilton), Home2 Suites by Hilton (groupe Hilton), SpringHill Suites (groupe Marriott) et TownePlace Suites (groupe Marriott).
La première phase sera ainsi bientôt achevée et Flamingo Crossings dispose de plusieurs zones d'expansion pour des ajouts futurs dans les domaines du commerce, de la restauration, du divertissement et résidentiel.
