Our small and mighty story team @sharktooth72 @cisforfrenchfry @seth.boyden.art @dlee08 were so FUN to work with. I love the collaborative process and story geniuses @disneyanimation , they bring the laughs, and the heart to every drawing and panel they do Pictured above are some early sketches...we drew a lot of noses Do you have a favorite? We were really trying to emulate a board driven story room, where the best ideas rise to the top and the story artists have freedom to play. I love looking back on these, from over a year ago in June 2019.

Part 2 #onceuponasnowman behind the scenes! As I mentioned in my last post, this idea started wayyyy back in 2012/2013 with some simple doodles...and for years I chipped away at it, on and off in many different forms. A short film, a children’s book, a musical(more to come)...because I truly felt this was an idea worth pursuing, I just had no idea how, when or if it would ever happen. Finally, I saw an opportunity for this little short to have a home, when @disneyplus launched and @disneyanimation was starting to look for new ideas. SO, I pulled together 6-7 years worth of doodles, ideas and writing and put a pitch package together! More to come about pitching and how @sharktooth72 and I partnered up to work on this fun little project!!!

Creating #onceuponasnowman has been an unbelievable journey and a true highlight of my career. Every few days I will post some behind the scenes stories, drawings and write about my experience...let’s start from the beginning!
Back in 2012 I started my dream job @disneyanimation as an #animation trainee! My very first film at #disney was #frozen working as a crowd animator and eventually animating my first Disney character #olaf under the supervision and mentorships of @mrhyrum !!! When I started animating on Frozen, #letitgo was being created...it was magical to witness it coming to life. I remember @chadsellz beautifully animating #elsa making #olaf ...creating life for the first time...and then, she just walks away and continues singing. At that exact moment, I knew there was an origin story, beginning during Let it Go and connecting 20 minutes later to where Olaf walks into all of our lives and gets his carrot nose.
I got out my pen and paper and just started writing, doodling and dreaming up a story. These are the original sketches from early 2013...it’s so hard for me to believe that 7 years later, I would have the privilege of bringing this little story to life with @sharktooth72 and all the amazing talents @disneyanimation .

Huge congrats today for the wonderful team who worked on Myth: A Frozen Tale as it was just nominated by @aixrorg for VR Film of the Year! To celebrate, here is one of the most fun/dramatic pieces of artwork I got to work on for the show - the dark Nokk! (swipe for a closer look ) This was a joy to work on and I’m so happy and proud for this wonderful team. Thanks @jeffkgipson and @nickaruss for letting me be a part of it!! #mythafrozentale#nokk#frozen2#disney#frozen
Merci MadEye!

A breakdown of one of my shots from Frozen 2- lighting by @masonkhoo ! We ended up putting some xgen ice diamonds in the wall for this effect! .
Another breakdown of a set I worked on for Frozen 2. From the model our dept receives, to added detail sculpting and xgen plants, then color and reflectance, and final lighting which was done by Ayman Akoshali. I love working on films because it’s such a large team effort to make a project like this! .
When we decided that the Nokk would play an important role in Myth: A Frozen Tale, we knew we needed to push the Nokk in a more stylized direction than what was in the movie, and it felt like the perfect opportunity to push that ethereal-ness as much as possible. I had fallen in love with Annette Marnat’s and @jamwoodser ‘s beautiful, almost glowing visual development work of the Nokk for #Frozen2, and wanted to evoke a similar magic for Myth. We also needed two versions of the Nokk for Myth - a dark and a light version. These images are some of my exploration for what the VR Nokk could look like. I was so happy to have the chance to explore this character since I didn’t get to work on the Nokk in the film (and who DOESN’T want to paint a magical water horse???) I’m so happy with the final result, and I can’t wait until everyone can have the opportunity to experience the film! We are at #sundance this weekend and are working on ways for everyone to watch Myth:A Frozen Tale soon! If you happen to be at Sundance this weekend, come find us at the Disney Studio Lab space on Main Street! #disneyfrozen#disney#mythafrozentale#frozen
Dans la VO, Olaf affirme un "Did you know that..."
Ok seriously? I get to work on a horse? A water horse called the Nokk? My career was complete. I was 5 years old again, well I still have horses so I never grew out of it I guess. I worked closely with character, animation, effects, tech Anim. Look and lighting. It took a team to make this happen. I love these folks for making my little girl dreams come true. I can’t thank them enough for making this Nokk so beautiful. #disney#waltdisney#disneyanimationstudios#animation#frozen2#frozen2art#nokk#waterhorse#conceptart#visdev#visdevelopement#waterhorse

I remember when I was 3 or so and my grandfather put me in front of the saddle and galloped across the field, what is now the Burbank equestrian center. I remember being disappointed because our rental horse had a short tail. I was hoping for a long flowing fairytale tail. But the moment that horse flew across the field I was hooked. Saving baby sitting money bits at a time I was able to rent the horses on my own. After I started working at Disney I bought my first car and then a horse. They are magical creatures and working on this Nokk was a fairytale dream come true. #disney#waltdisney#waltdisneystudios#waltdisneyanimationstudios#waltdisneyanimation#elsa#nokk#waterhorse#frozen2#frozen2art#conceptart#visdev#visdevart#visualdevelopment#lightingdesign
The very first costume designs that I was asked to work on for #frozen2 over 2 years ago. These designs were for a scene that ultimately didn’t make it into the film, but that featured the girls traveling in inclement weather. While Elsa didn’t keep her hood, a lot of the elements of this design ended up being adopted into her travel coat. We were so early in the process that we didn’t have a plan for color yet, so I was asked to work in greyscale. We don’t always work this way, but sometimes it is good to switch things up! After a few years away, it was so wonderful to work with these characters again. They just feel like home #frozen2#elsa#anna#disneyfrozen#disney

As we started to explore Elsa’s travel costume, we had just a few elements that we knew we needed to include. She needed to be wearing layers, her hemline had to be off the ground, and she needed to be wearing some kind of pant to support the amount of activity she would be put through. Also, if her costume could include an element that would move well in the wind (since we did know that Gale would be interacting with her), that would be a bonus. I thought it was important to include Gale in the design process to give everything a little more context. Normally on Frozen we try to hone in on a favorite design or two before we show our directors, but this was such new territory for us that we did show all of these designs (and probably more) to get their feedback. Ultimately, they asked for a combination of two of these designs and that is where we landed - can you tell which two? I love working with Elsa, and this assignment was certainly a challenge. The process of working on these films is always an exciting journey #frozen2#frozen#elsa#disney

I can’t believe I am saying this, but FROZEN 2 is better than its predecessor. Darker, a little more mature, but still an excellent film for families, the songs believe it or not are catchier, so parents beware. SEE THIS MOVIE! #Frozen2

#Frozen2 is breathtakingly beautiful and leans in on empowerment for its characters. I cried at least 3 times. From the story to the last thread on Elsa's dress, the care and love put into it shows. And, good news, every one of Team Elsa gets at least one solo this time around.

Loved #Frozen2. It’s a darker, more complex and more emotionally mature story, continuing everything you love about the first movie and upping the ante while maintaining the intimacy of the original. Gorgeous animation, wonderful new characters and (FINALLY) a Kristoff song!

#Frozen2 embarks as not just an evolution of its characters, but it sincerely acknowledges that it's fanbase has grown over the last 6 years, and they have new things to learn in a changing world. Songs are plentiful. Beautiful shots at times. It was something I REALLY needed.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! FROZEN 2 IS ACTUALLY THE PERFECT SEQUEL! The magic, the depth, the healing from the TRAUMA! I couldn’t name a better Disney Sequel. You shouldn’t walk to see #Frozen2, YOU SHOULD RUN! Bravo, Disney. Thanks for making me UGLY cry in theaters.
"Nothing is more exciting than getting back in the booth with this incredible team. Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee, Peter Del Vecho, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Bobby Lopez along with John Lasseter and the amazing people at @disneyanimation have created a story that carries on the incredible legacy of the original #Frozen and continues to build and expand on the characters and themes in new and exciting ways. Unfortunately, that's all I can tell you right now. But, rest assured #Frozen2 is on the way and is going to be special. 11.27.19"
