- Citation :

Disneyland Resort president discusses expansion
Plans include a new Tinker Bell attraction to open at Disneyland in October.

IRVINE – More rides, theme park land and hotel rooms are in the future for the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, said Disneyland Resort President Ed Grier Wednesday. Disney plans to add a Tinker Bell attraction at Disneyland in October, 253 rooms to the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa and new rides and themed lands to Disney's California Adventure. At some point, Disney might add a third theme park on 88 acres of land next to Disneyland and possibly operate two hotels proposed for the Anaheim GardenWalk, Grier told a crowd of about 150 at an Orange County Forum event Wednesday. "We had great success with the 50th anniversary (of Disneyland)," Grier said. "Now it's about how we keep that momentum going." Here are Disney's Anaheim expansion plans: A Tinker Bell attraction will open at Disneyland in October. This was the first time Grier mentioned the attraction, and he was short on details. All he would say is that "we know how special she is to all our guests" and that she will be in Disneyland in October. That timing coincides with the Oct. 28 Disney DVD and Blu-ray release of "Tinker Bell," the first in a new franchise of original movies that include the Peter Pan-movie character along with other fairies. California Adventure expansion plans were announced in October and are expected to be completed by 2012. Those $1.2 billion plans include: a land based on the "Cars" movie, a "Little Mermaid"-themed ride, a new 1920s plaza, an interactive "Toy Story Mania!" ride opening this summer and a "World of Color" show in the lagoon. Leaving the park is the Golden Gate Bridge structure, tall letters spelling out "California" and the Golden Dreams theater. Grier said the expansion is intended to bring more "memorable attractions" and "more Disney" to the theme park. The Grand Californian Hotel and Spa is adding 253 rooms, including its first timeshare-type villas on the West Coast. The capacity will increase by about 30 percent – up to 998 rooms – at the hotel that Grier said has "very strong occupancy rates." A third theme park was hinted at by Grier on Wednesday. "We do see a tremendous opportunity on our 88 acres of land," Grier said. Two GardenWalk hotels may be operated by Disney. Grier only told the crowd that Disney is continuing to look into operating two new hotels in the GardenWalk – a hotel, shopping and dining center between Katella Avenue and Disney Way that includes plans for up to 866 hotel rooms. |

OPEN HOLLOW
Tinker Bell and her friends are now officially welcoming guests into their Pixie home. The pond area which used to feature a King Triton sculpture now features a bubbling fountain. The new meet-and-greet has been drawing stand-by times of over an hour and a half. The area is so completely changed that you'd never knew the Little Mermaid once called the area home at Disneyland. The entire area is very nicely themed, and if Disney is dedicating this much time and money to a little meet-and-greet, then one can only imagine the effort and resources going towards more substantial efforts around the Resort. Exciting! Handicapped guests enter through the exit. Of course, you can get your Pixie Hollow souvenirs at the exit... http://micechat.com/forums/blogs/dateline-disneyland/816-10-31-christmas-already-pier-closures-pixie-hollow-high-school-musical-3-more.html |

She files this report and shares her photos. I spent the afternoon (10/27/08) at the Magic Kingdom to see the new Pixie Hollow and Tinker Bell Meet and Greet. I got to the park about 11am and took the Train from Main St to Toontown Fair . The Pixies are meeting in the Country Fair tent and have taken over the room where Goofy, Pluto and Donald used to meet guests. The area is now half princess and half fairy. The princess line was over 60 minutes long at noon. The Fairies had a 90 minute wait time showing but it took about double that to get into the room with Tinker Bell and her Fairy Friends. Once through the door you are led into a hallway where "pixie dust" and "fairies" are born. Everyone "shrinks" to be the same size as Tinker Bell (you are given a photopass card on a stretch cord similar to the food and wine gift card or Waterpark Photopass). You wait in the hallway until you are led into Pixie Hollow, three groups are allowed in at a time. Each fairy takes you to their station. They are true to character and very nice. They take photo's and sign autographs for everyone. RosettaIridessaTinker BellAt that point you are shown out to the hall to "follow the magic" out to the park. It was a great experience but the wait times will be long. Those who may have mobility issues may find it to be difficult to wait that long. I use a cane or a scooter and it was too much for me but I didn't want to leave since I had already waited so long. 3 hours was way too long and for me I wouldn't have gone out of my way for this but since it is new I just had to see what it was like. |
