Dwayne Johnson In Talks To Reprise Maui For Disney’s Animated ‘Moana 2’; Live-Action Pic Bound To Shift Dates
One mega big piece of information that Disney CEO Bob Iger forgot to mention in his announcement of Moana 2 earlier this week was whether Dwayne Johnson was coming back to reprise his iconic role as the demigod Maui. Deadline has learned that the action star in fact is in talks, and it’s looking good. And as Maui says, “You’re welcome.”
The jury is still out on whether Auli’i Cravalho comes back as the voice of Moana. We hear that the actress is in talks, but they aren’t as close as Johnson’s. Cravalho already said in May on social that she won’t be reprising Moana in the live-action version of the movie.
“I’m truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, to honor our incredible Pacific people’s cultures and communities that help inspire her story. And I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representations to come. Mahalo,” Cravalho wrote at the time.
Iger mentioned that the studio was so blown away by the Disney+ series they had in development for Moana, they decided to turn it into a theatrical sequel, dated for the studio’s much-favored Thanksgiving stretch of November 27. The sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina. The only thing missing in Moana 2 is songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Hamilton architect was Oscar nominated for the ditty “How Far I’ll Go” from the original 2016 movie.
What happens to the live-action version of Moana, which Johnson is not only starring in but also producing under his Seven Bucks label? Does it stick to its June 27, 2025 theatrical release? No, it won’t, but Disney needs to back-fill that date with another theatrical release. Even more than that, the studio isn’t even in production on the live-action version.
Disney and Seven Bucks sources did not return requests for comment. Johnson winked at the news on IG today.

Dwayne Johnson Confirms the Live-Action 'Moana' Movie Has Found Its Star (Exclusive)
The actor teased that Moana herself has been cast.
Dwayne Johnson is spilling some Moana tea. ET's Nischelle Turner spoke to the actor during the WWE WrestleMania 40 Kickoff event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Thursday, and he revealed that the team behind the upcoming live-action version of Moana has found its leading lady.
"One of the exciting things about that was actually finding our Moana and how exciting that has been," he told ET. "The global search to find our Moana -- which -- between you and I, we found her -- not gonna tell you yet. [It's] very exciting."
Auli'i Cravalho voiced the character in the 2016 film, but won't be returning for the live-action version. Others who worked on the project, including Johnson, who voiced Maui, will be involved.
"Lin Manuel Miranda's coming back. We're doing the music. Tommy Kail is our director, who directed Hamilton," he said. "You put everybody together and you want to put the best team together and then you really go for it."
As for what fans can expect from the film, which Johnson said he's "excited" to start shooting later this year, the actor teased, "The scale should be beautiful."
On top of the live-action film, Disney announced earlier this month that an animated sequel to Moana will be released on Nov. 27.
"It's very exciting. I can't wait for fans to see the film, the technology, the effects, cutting edge," Johnson told ET. "We all really went for it. We thought if we're gonna make a sequel to something so beloved, let's really go for it."
"You also have the benefit and the beauty of the ocean. In Moana... the ocean is alive, so when the ocean has a heartbeat and a pulse, that's just a whole different thing," he added. "I can't wait. All new music, which we're excited."
Cravalho has yet to reveal if she's part of the animated sequel.
Invraisemblable.

Disney Sets ‘Toy Story 5,’ ‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ for 2026, Delays Live-Action ‘Moana’ by a Year
Jared Leto's 'Tron: Ares' also gets a date as among a slew of changes.
Woody and Buzz have a date to return to theaters. Disney will release Pixar’s Toy Story 5 on June 19, 2026, the studio announced Friday.
Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced Toy Story 5 in February 2023, with the sequel an attempt to return to form for the franchise after the disappointing performance of the 2022 spinoff, Lightyear, which voice starred Chris Evans. Toy Story has spanned four mainline films dating back to 1995, with the most recent installment topping $1 billion at the box office in 2019. The features have voice starred Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear.
Toy Story 5‘s date with theaters was among a slew of changes and additions made to the Disney release calendar. The studio also pushing Dwayne Johnson’s live-action remake of Moana by a year to July 10, 2026 (it was previously slated for from June 27, 2025). The move gives the remake breathing room from the animated Moana 2, which opens this November.
The studio also confirmed that the Star Wars feature The Mandalorian & Grogu will bow on May 22, 2026, as had been speculated. The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau is directing the film, which spins out of his Disney+ show and stars Pedro Pascal. It is a particularly important feature, as Lucasfilm seeks to return Star Wars to the big screen for the first time since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. While the franchise has thrived on Disney+, multiple attempts to relaunch it as a big screen property have fizzled in development.
In other news, the Jared Leto starrer Tron: Ares opens Oct. 10, 2025. The film follows the 1982 cult classic Tron, and 2010’s Tron: Legacy. While previous films have centered on a character going inside a computer, the new installment is said to take place mostly in the real world as an AI escapes its digital confines.
Meanwhile, 20th Century’s The Amateur, starring Rami Malek and Rachel Brosnahan, has been pushed from Nov. 8, 2024 to April 11, 2025.
“We are leaning into our unrivaled brands,” Iger said in 2023 when announcing Toy Story 5 as among a number of sequels in the works, including more from Zootopia and Frozen.
