The Hollywood Reporter a écrit:
‘Fantastic Four’: ‘WandaVision’ Director Matt Shakman in Talks to Helm

Following the exit of Jon Watts, Marvel's signature superhero team has found a new director.

Matt Shakman, the veteran TV director who ushered Marvel Studios into the age of television, is in early talks to make the jump to MCU features with Fantastic Four, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Shakman became a Marvel favorite with the Emmy-winning WandaVision, the first MCU series released for Disney+. He came up as a director on FX’s long-running comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia before graduating to event storytelling with Game of Thrones. In July 2021, Paramount tapped him to direct the next Star Trek film, which is currently dated for Dec. 22, 2023. It is unclear if he will remain involved.

Other filmmakers who met on the project included Love and Monsters director Michael Matthews and Dog filmmaker Reid Carolin. The two finalists ultimately were Matthews and Shakman, according to sources.

Fantastic Four will kick off Phase 6 of Marvel’s storytelling, with the film due out Nov. 8, 2024. No casting is known, but John Krasinski, who was long fancast in the role, appeared as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, released in May. However, it was an alternative-universe version of the character, meaning it is unknown if Krasinski will continue in the role.

Writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby introduced the team of Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and the Thing in the pages of Fantastic Four No. 1 in 1961. The comic reinvented the publisher, then known as Timely, and launched the Marvel Universe as a shared storytelling canvas.

The Fantastic Four is a cornerstone of the Marvel mythos but has never had a big-screen adaptation embraced by audiences. In the 1990s, Roger Corman produced a low-rent film that was never released, while 20th Century Fox released films in 2005 and 2007 that featured future Captain America actor Chris Evans as the Human Torch. (In 2010, there was even talk of a Paul Greengrass-helmed Fantastic Four vs. the X-Men crossover movie). Filmmaker Josh Trank helmed the disastrous 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, scuttling plans for more. A few years later, Disney acquired the rights to the superteam when the company purchased 20th Century Fox.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige first announced a new Fantastic Four film in December 2020 during a Disney investor day, with Spider-Man director Jon Watts attached to helm. (Watts later announced his departure in April 2022.) Feige has said this will not be an origin story, telling THR at San Diego Comic-Con in July, “A lot of people know this origin story. A lot of people know the basics. How do we take that and bring something that they’ve never seen before?”

The Hollywood Reporter a écrit:
‘Fantastic Four’ Movie Gets New Writer With ‘Avatar 2’ Scribe Josh Friedman (Exclusive)

Matt Shakman, who was the key director behind Marvel series 'WandaVision,' is on board to helm the feature.

Marvel’s first family is getting a rewrite. Josh Friedman, who worked on Avatar: The Way of Water and developed Snowpiercer as a TNT television series, has been tapped to write the script for Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four.

Matt Shakman, who was the key director behind Marvel series WandaVision, is on board to helm the feature that has a release date of Feb. 14, 2025, and is set to kick off Phase 6 of its storytelling universe.

Fantastic Four was the heroic team that introduced readers, and the world at large, to Marvel Comics and ushered in the Marvel Age, as the self-generated hype machine described it in the 1960s.

Written by editor Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby, Fantastic Four No. 1 brought forth Reed Richards, a scientist dedicated to his work and unafraid to push the boundaries of science; Sue Storm, his girlfriend-turned-wife; Johnny Storm, Sue’s hothead and hot-rod-loving brother; and Ben Grimm, Richards’ beefy best friend. After an unauthorized trip into space and being irradiated with cosmic rays, they become heroes Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Human Torch and The Thing, respectively.

Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer were the previous writers on the project, and Friedman’s hire signals a potential change in tone. Kaplan and Springer are neophyte scribes known for their comedy scripts. Among the works they have in development are the Rebel Wilson comedy K-Pop: Lost in America and Disaster Wedding, which has Palm Springs filmmaker Max Barbakow attached to direct.

Friedman, on the other hand, is a veteran of the sci-fi genre. He co-wrote War of the Worlds, the Steven Spielberg-Tom Cruise update on the H.G. Wells classic, and then acted as the writer-creator of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the Terminator TV series that served as his first foray into the world of James Cameron. Years later, he would return to work on 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate and was one of the writers Cameron turned to for help in world-building and crafting stories for his multi-movie Avatar franchise.

The scribe is also the show co-creator of Foundation, the ambitious Apple series adapting the Isaac Asimov stories; the second season is due to debut later this year. And he adapted for the small screen Snowpiercer, TNT’s take on the Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi movie, although he left the show over creative differences.

Friedman is repped by CAA and Jackoway Austen.

Collider a écrit:
'Fantastic Four' Director Gives Casting and Filming Update on MCU Movie [Exclusive]

Director Matt Shakman says the film will be "unlike anything at Marvel you've seen."

• Director Matt Shakman confirmed that his upcoming Fantastic Four film will shoot in London next year, pending the resolution of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.
• The casting for the film cannot be announced yet due to the strike, but Shakman expressed excitement in sharing the news once the strike is resolved.
• Shakman hinted that the Fantastic Four movie will be different from anything we've seen in the Marvel universe before, both in terms of story and filmmaking approach.

Marvel fans have rightly been concerned about the upcoming slate of Phase 5 and 6 projects in the MCU which have been placed on the back burner as a result of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but director Matt Shakman revealed to Collider's Editor-in-chief Steve Weintraub during an interview for his upcoming Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, that his upcoming Fantastic Four film will shoot next year in London, with Marvel aiming for a springtime start on getting Marvel's First Family into the Multiverse Saga currently besieging our favorite superheroes.

A number of exciting names have been linked to the titular quartet for the film—Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, Sue Storm and her brother, Johnny Storm—and the parts are some of the most coveted in Hollywood. To date, there has been absolutely no confirmation in any way for the film, and it's been complicated by the strikes, as Shakman revealed. One name linked to the role of Reed Richards has long been John Krasinski, who played a variant of the character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, Krasinski has stated he's unlikely to play the role again, as he told The Wrap back in 2022.

As one would expect with a project of this size and scale, plus the Marvel of it all, concrete information is hard to uncover. On the casting front, Shakman noted that with the SAG strike ongoing, it was impossible to announce anything or put a timescale on it. However, he did add that he was very excited to share the news with fans and that there would be a plan in place to announce the casting as soon as the strike came to a successful conclusion for the actors.

A Legendary Base of Operations

Shakman confirmed that, successful outcome of the SAG-AFTRA strike pending, the movie would be heading to the Legendary Pinewood Studios where film history has been made throughout the decades. "Yes, we are definitely gonna go in front of cameras next year," he said. "Probably the spring. [It will shoot in] London. Pinewood."

Unlike Anything We've Seen

Weintraub asked Shakman about the screenplay for the upcoming feature and, as expected, details were thin on the ground, but his enthusiasm was evident as he teased that it was "certainly unlike anything at Marvel you've seen before."

"It's different in so many ways. I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can't. But I think it's going to be unlike anything you've seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you've seen before."

For more on Fantastic Four, you can watch what Shakman told us in the player or read the full transcript below. Look for more with Shakman next week on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

COLLIDER: I heard you might be working on a movie, so how’s that going?

MATT SHAKMAN: Absolutely having a great time. It's a dream of mine to be able to work on that. I've loved those characters since I was little. It's such an awesome world to be in. The script is awesome, the characters are brilliant. I'm super excited. I'm obviously very happy now that the writers’ strike has resolved in such a good way, and we're able to reunite with Josh Friedman, our amazing screenwriter. I'm really hoping for a fair and equitable resolution to the actors’ strike soon, too. Keeping our fingers crossed. But we’re going! We're a snowball heading downhill. It's awesome. It's got a lot of momentum. It's really fun.

I'm really hoping for a fair and equitable resolution to the actors’ strike soon, too. Keeping our fingers crossed. But we’re going! We're a snowball heading downhill. It's awesome. It's got a lot of momentum. It's really fun.

I'm not asking you any spoiler-type things, but assuming the SAG strike gets resolved, is the hope to be filming early next year?

SHAKMAN: Yes, we are definitely gonna go in front of cameras next year. Probably the spring.

Are you London or Atlanta?

SHAKMAN: London. Pinewood.

I think Marvel's doing a lot of stuff at that studio.

SHAKMAN: They are. Yeah, it's a great place. And again, talk about a wonderful old studio like Toho, walking around and imagining Bugsy Malone and whipped cream machine guns, you know? I'm excited. I can't wait.

One of the things about Fantastic Four is you have some characters that have unique abilities, and I would imagine you have been, even while the strike’s been on, you've been probably working with VFX companies to try to develop those. How is that gonna look on screen? How has it been looking at VFX for some of these characters and finding the way you want to bring these things to life?

SHAKMAN: We have been nonstop. Despite the strikes, yes, we've been working with the effects and with production design and building our world, and that's been incredibly exciting. You know, how do you translate those skills into live-action in dynamic ways? Because some things that work beautifully in John Byrne and Jack Kirby are a little tougher when you're filming them. How do you make sure that things are exciting but also grounded in a scientific thing, which is also part of the Fantastic Four that I love? There's some stuff I'm super excited about. I can't say too much, you know?

Obviously, people are very excited to know when you're going to announce casting, so when do you think fans are going to find out information?

SHAKMAN: Hard to say. Like I said, we're in the middle of a SAG strike, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they get a great deal really soon and we can go back. Then, once that's resolved, there'll be a plan at that point, but I can't say too much. There will be an announcement at some point! I know that the internet is very excited to find out, and I'm excited to share it. I just can't do it yet.

One of my last things is I love IMAX and the large screen format. What [Christopher] Nolan did with Oppenheimer was amazing in getting people so excited to go see IMAX 70mm. Is that something that have you discussed with Marvel, being like, “Hey, look, can we shoot these sequences in IMAX? Can we use IMAX cameras for the whole thing?” How much is that sort of permeated into your head, watching what Nolan did with Oppenheimer?

SHAKMAN: What Nolan did with Oppenheimer was extraordinary. What Denis Villeneuve has done with Dune is extraordinary. I mean, the format is immersive in the best way. I love seeing things in IMAX, I go whenever I can. And I think that the world of the Fantastic Four would absolutely lend itself to that kind of immersive experience.

[Laughs] So do you think you're gonna have some IMAX in this movie or…?

SHAKMAN: I think, yes. If I were a betting man, I think I would do that. Buy your IMAX stock right now.

I appreciate that. My last thing for you: you mentioned that the script is awesome. What can you tease people, if anything, about how this film might be different than previous Marvel films? What's your take on this, and how will it be different than maybe the other things that have come before?

SHAKMAN: It's different in so many ways. I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can't. But I think it's going to be unlike anything you've seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you've seen before.

Fantastic Four is scheduled to be released on May 2, 2025, as part of Phase Six of the MCU.

Deadline a écrit:
Pedro Pascal Eyed To Play Reed Richards In Marvel Studios’ ‘Fantastic Four’

After months of speculation over who might play Reed Richards aka Mr. Fantastic in Marvel Studios‘ Fantastic Four, the wait may be finally over. While a deal is far from done, sources tell Deadline that three-time Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal is in talks to play the leader of the iconic superhero team.

Insiders add that scheduling is still being worked out, but multiple sources close to the negotiations are saying it’s headed in the right direction for Pascal to do this and his other future projects. Pascal has a full dance card that includes Gladiator 2, which is expected to go into production before the end of the year, as well as his popular HBO series The Last Of Us, which is expected to shoot next year.

Marvel had no comment.

As for other members of the team, that can now be worked out as it was essential to figure out who would be playing Richards before they could go out with offers to others. The hope would be to shoot early next year, so expect this cast to fill out quickly with director Matt Shakman currently in pre-production at Pinewood Studios in England. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will produce.

Pascal has been on quite the run in recent years including his Emmy-nominated role in the hit HBO series The Last of Us (he was also nominated for hosting Saturday Night Live, which was one of the more popular episodes of last season).

He is repped by CAA.

The Times a écrit:

Vanessa Kirby: I was scared filming Napoleon — my knees were shaking

The actress on starring in Ridley Scott’s biopic, how The Crown changed her life and whether she’s taking a lead role in Marvel’s Fantastic Four

[...]

As for the future, it's been reported that Kirby has nudged Margot Robbie out of pole position for the role of Sue Storm in Marvel's highly anticipated Fantastic Four reboot. When I ask her about it she says, "Humm," and pauses for 11 seconds before saying, very carefully: "Sue Storm is the OG. The Fantastic Four were the first ones, from 1961, so there's something amazing about that history, and I would absolutely love it."

‘Fantastic Four’ Casts Ralph Ineson as Galactus (Exclusive)

The Fantastic 4: First Steps [Marvel - 2025] Imag1607

The actor, known for genre work such as 'The Witch' and 'Game of Thrones,' is in talks to play a (very) big bad for Marvel Studios.

The Fantastic Four, meet your villain.

Ralph Ineson, the British actor whose three-decade career ranges from the Harry Potter movies to recent horror prequel The First Omen, has landed the plum part of Galactus, the antagonist in Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four.

The high-profile, big-budget outing, the Fantastic Four’s first under the Marvel Cinematic Universe umbrella, has been casting up in recent weeks ahead of a planned mid-summer shoot in England.

On the call sheet are Perdro Pascal as scientist Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as her hot-heated brother Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richards’ friend with body issues, Ben Grimm/The Thing. Also cast are Julia Garner as a female Silver Surfer and Paul Walter Hauser in an undisclosed role, which some have theorized could be Mole Man or the robot H.E.R.B.I.E. John Malkovich is also signed on.

Ineson is said to be playing Galactus, an intergalactic being who eats the life force of planets. And now he just picked the wrong planet to nosh on.

In the Marvel comics, Galactus, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, has appeared as a towering human-like figure. The character made his big screen debut in 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which portrayed him in the form of a CGI-generated cosmic cloud. It was an appearance that did not go well with audiences.

Matt Shakman is directing the new Fantastic Four feature, which has Marvel taking the interesting creative choice of setting the story in the 1960s, the era when the super-team was first created. Eric Pearson, Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer wrote the screenplay. Peter Cameron (WandaVision) has also done some writing on the project.

Ineson is currently on screens as a priest in 20th Century’s The First Omen and last year played a key role in Gareth Edwards’ The Creator. He previously had a role in Robert Eggers’ Viking drama The Northman and reteams with the filmmaker, with whom he first worked on acclaimed horror movie The Witch, for vampire thriller Nosferatu, whose A-list cast includes Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Bill Skarsgard and Willem Dafoe. Focus releases Nosferatu in December.. He is currently in production on Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein along with Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz.

Ineson is repped by Gersh and Gordon and French.
