2023 is going to be a big year—and not just because it features our favorite number! In celebration of the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, SC Exhibitions has begun production on an exhibition that showcases the company’s history and rich legacy, to premiere at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in February 2023.

We at D23 are familiar with The Walt Disney Archives’ extensive collection of historical Disney artifacts, hundreds of which will be featured in the exhibition. Along with the galleries, the exhibition will feature an immersive environment of sight and sound spanning 15,000 square feet, showcasing stories and characters from The Walt Disney Company’s last century.

“As we approach the 100th Anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, we at the Walt Disney Archives are incredibly excited about traveling a new and unique exhibit marking a century of unparalleled innovation and storytelling with the world,” said Rebecca Cline, director of the Walt Disney Archives. “This groundbreaking exhibition will celebrate the wonder of Disney, from 1923 to the present and into the future.”

Historian and Co-Curator Paula Sigman Lowery, an internationally recognized expert on Walt Disney and The Walt Disney Company, shares this insight on the future exhibit: “It’s thrilling to bring Disney’s crown jewels—art, memorabilia, costumes, props, and one-of-a kind treasures—to public view—and to explore the story of one of the world’s most creative entertainment companies. Many of these objects have never before been seen outside the company’s archival, animation, and Imagineering vaults.”

President and CEO of The Franklin Institute Larry Dubinski added that “The Franklin Institute is thrilled to debut this world premiere exhibition in Philadelphia during the remarkable 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company. We look forward to celebrating the legacy of a creative empire synonymous with imaginative storytelling, innovation, discovery, and wonder that spans generations and delivers widespread, undeniable global appeal.”

The exhibition marks the third collaboration between SC Exhibitions and Studio TK, a Berlin-based collective of architects, visual artists, and experts of entertainment technology who specialize in aiding the creation of brand exhibitions. “It’s great to work at The Franklin Institute again, where our ‘Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes’ exhibit drew hundreds of thousands of visitors in summer 2019 to the galleries. It’s a big honor to develop the design for the 100th anniversary exhibit of The Walt Disney Company with the Walt Disney Archives,” says Studio TK exhibition designer Tobias Kunz.

The as-yet-untitled “Disney Centennial” exhibition will launch in February 2023 at The Franklin Institute, with a second, parallel staging for territories outside the U.S. set to have its global premiere the following month, says Dieter Semmelmann, SC Exhibitions CEO.

Where can you see the original “Feed the Birds” snow globe from Mary Poppins, an actual ride vehicle from Disneyland Park’s Peter Pan’s Flight, and the chimes used to make Tinker Bell’s iconic jingle? Only within Disney100: The Exhibition, a celebration of The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary that opens February 18 at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, beginning a five-year journey across the continent.

That official opening day and many more details and exclusive visual treats were among the revelations Saturday at D23 Expo, as part of the panel “The Making of Disney100: The Exhibition,” presented on the Backlot Stage. Becky Cline, director of the Walt Disney Archives—the main creative force behind the exhibition—both led and moderated the panel. The challenge of putting the show together, she said, was, “How do you tell the story of 100 years of Disney in 15,000 square feet?”

An early decision was that the exhibition would not be presented in strict chronological order but rather thematically, in 10 galleries inspired by “Walt Disney’s philosophies,” explained Paula Sigman-Lowery, the exhibition’s curator. “I didn’t want people to have to walk through eight galleries before they meet Olaf,” she said. After an introductory gallery introducing Walt Disney and his early life and creations, subsequent galleries are based on themes such as sound and music, story development, technological innovation, and the spirit of adventure.

Of course, with the Walt Disney Archives behind the show, priceless artifacts will be showcased throughout. The Archives worked with Berlin, Germany-based exhibition design firm StudioTK to create “a stage for all these beautiful artifacts… to make them shine,” said Annette Doonan, StudioTK’s head of content. “They are the real stars of the exhibition.”

More than 250 rarely seen original artworks and artifacts, costumes and props, and other memorabilia will be included in the exhibition, celebrating feature filmmaking from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Strange World, Disney Parks and products, Disney music, and more, including the latest members of the Disney family: Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and National Geographic.

StudioTK also created “unique interactive experiences” for each gallery. For example, while the actual prop book used at the opening of Sleeping Beauty will be on display, “everybody will get to see every page” inside the book, Doonan revealed, through an original video display—and each page is further brought to life with new animated touches.

Such artifacts are the “crown jewels” of the Walt Disney Archives, said Archives curator Kelsey Williams, who shared images of some other items heading to Philadelphia, including a unique Pinocchio maquette, that Mary Poppins snow globe, and Cinderella’s glass slipper.

The panel also revealed two more stops along the North American tour: Chicago, Illinois, Walt Disney’s birthplace; and Kansas City, Missouri, where Walt spent much of his youth and where he founded his first animation studio, Laugh-O-gram Films, Inc. Meanwhile, a second unit of the exhibition—with the same design as the U.S. unit but with many unique artifacts of its own—will open April 18 in Olympic Park, Munich, Germany. More European stops will be announced in the coming months.

The panelists also shared the creation and final design of the 12 colorful posters designed for the exhibition by David Pacheco and Shane Enoch, who also joined the panel. In addition to the collectible posters, the exhibition will have a colorful catalog, including essays by film historian and critic Leonard Maltin; Imagineer Joe Rohde; Disney producer, director, and author Don Hahn; and others. A coffee-table book inspired by the exhibition, titled The Story of Disney: 100 Years of Wonder will also be available next year, along with a new book of quotations from Walt Disney (Walt Disney’s Words), and a commemorative edition of Bob Thomas’ definitive biography, Walt Disney: An American Original.

As Cline put it, “It didn’t really start with a mouse. It started with a man. Walt Disney.”

It all started with a mouse, and fans will have the opportunity to see where it all began with some of the earliest sketches of Mickey Mouse including original animation drawings from his debut in Steamboat Willie (1928).

In another gallery, treasured props from the Mary Poppins films allow guests to “step in time” as they take a closer look at an original carousel horse from Mary Poppins (1964) as well as the snow globe of St. Paul’s Cathedral from Mary Poppins Returns (2018), which will come to life in a dazzling way.




A galaxy far, far away is closer than ever as guests can see original costumes and props belonging to favorite characters from Star Wars. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has assembled a collection of items from Earth’s Mightiest Heroes that are sure to be a smash. The exhibit is not only a sight to behold, but also includes sounds to cherish as guests discover the key role music plays in Disney storytelling.

L'exposition Disney 100 - The Exhibition qui est sur le point d'accueillir officiellement ses premiers visiteurs ce weekend à Philadelphie, est l'aboutissement d'un projet imaginé par Rebecca Kline, directrice des Walt Disney Archives, il y a cinq ans déjà.

Hier, parmi les invités de la cérémonie d'inauguration de l'exposition au Franklin Institute de Philadelphie, on remarque la présence de Rebecca Kline et Michael Vargo des Walt Disney Archives et des Disney Legends Bob Gurr et Don Hahn.

Je vais attendre Londres, c'est plus facile et surtout je préfère voir cette expo dans une langue que je comprends.

Après Londres, est-il prévu que cette exposition vienne à Paris ?
Est-ce qu'on sait où elle va aller en Europe par la suite ?

Les deux versions de l'exposition tourneront pendant cinq ans, mais les différentes étapes ne seront communiquées qu'au fur et à mesure.

Pour le moment, ce qui a été annoncé après Philadelphie (version A) et Munich (version B), c'est Chicago (version A), Kansas City (version A) et Londres (version B).

J'ose croire qu'il y aura bien un musée ou un palais d'exposition à Paris, Lyon, Bruxelles, Amsterdam ou Cologne qui sera intéressé à présenter cette exposition aux conditions de The Walt Disney Archives.

J'espère vraiment que l'exposition en Europe arrivera à Paris à un moment donné. Il serait dommage de ne pas y faire un passage.

Disney100: The Exhibition—the largest exhibition the Walt Disney Archives has ever created—continues its European tour at London’s ExCeL starting October 13, 2023, in celebration of The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary on October 16. After previous residencies captivating audiences at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the U.S., and Munich’s Small Olympic Hall, this exhibition will provide fans in the United Kingdom with the opportunity to explore a vast array of artifacts from the Walt Disney Archives alongside many of the “Crown Jewels” from renowned classics including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) to contemporary releases such as Encanto (2021), as well as the latest members of the Disney family—Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel.

With awe-inspiring memorabilia and never-before-seen works of art, visitors will be taken on a journey as they explore special behind-the-scenes glimpses into the creation of the company’s most popular characters, films, shows, and attractions—from Disneyland Paris to Walt Disney World Resort and beyond.

In the gallery “Where Do the Stories Come From?” visitors can see the actual Dutch language prop storybook from the opening scene of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and the carousel horse from Mary Poppins (1964) which Disney Legend Dick Van Dyke rode in his role as the lovable Bert. The stunning crystal glass slipper from Cinderella (2015) will also be on display alongside original artwork from the 1950 animated classic.

In “The Illusion of Life” gallery, the original artwork for the animation of Cruella from One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) and the renowned red dress from Cruella (2021) will be showcased, conveying the fully developed personality of the “erratic and eccentric” character. Visitors will also discover more about the creation of Disney heroes, villains, and sidekicks that have inspired and entertained audiences across the globe for 100 years—from the first sketch to the finished animation.

The stories of Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel invite you on a journey in “The Spirit of Adventure and Discovery” gallery, where fans can look forward to seeing Iron Man’s helmet from Avengers: Infinity War(2018), among other treasures. Of course, Disney100: The Exhibition also includes a look at Disney’s world-renowned theme parks. In the gallery “Your Disney World: A Day in the Parks,” visitors will feel as if they are standing within a version of Main Street, U.S.A., where they will see an attraction vehicle from Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride at Disneyland Park and a model of the Castle of Magical Dreams for Hong Kong Disneyland Park shine in the colorful light of fireworks.

During a visit to Disney100: The Exhibition, guests are encouraged to capture cherished moments. With a series of extraordinary backdrops and photo opportunities with some of their favorite and beloved Disney characters, fans, families, and kids can unleash their inner superhero as they take a photo with the life-sized Incredibles family from Disney and Pixar’s The Incredibles (2004), alongside photo opportunities with Mickey, Goofy, and Dopey. Kids can also test their observation skills with a series of “Did you know?” flip-style question-and-answer boards, offering child-friendly fun facts about assets found in each gallery.

It took four years to plan and assemble the artifacts for Disney100: The Exhibition, many of which will be on display for fans and Disney lovers for the first time. The majority of artifacts presented are from the collection of the Walt Disney Archives, with additional items from Marvel Studios, the Pixar Living Archives, the Walt Disney Animation Research Library, and the collections of Walt Disney Imagineering.

La prévente s'achève aujourd'hui, dès demain le grand public aura également accès à la réservation des billets d'entrée pour l'étape londonienne de l'exposition commémorant le centième anniversaire de Disney.

J'ai fait l'expo lundi dernier à Munich. J'ai vraiment aimé et les affiches postées plus haut étaient au prix de 15 € dans la boutique souvenir et sont dans un grand format.

Cette exposition est à faire et bénéficie d'une muséographie vraiment bien pensée qui met particulièrement bien en valeur les objets présentés et couvre beaucoup de sujets.

Mon seul bémol sur la version B visitée à Munich et que je reverrai à Londres en octobre est que la totalité (ou très très grande majorité) des documents (contrats, concept arts, storyboards etc...) sont des reproductions et que c'est vraiment dommage vu les fonds disponibles au sein des Walt Disney Archives. De même, aucun celluloïd d'animation n'est exposé alors que c'est le coeur de l'histoire de TWDC.

Ces réserves faites, c'est magnifique, émouvant, bien fait avec certaines pépites en terme d'objets. Il n'y en a pas tant que cela, mais c'est très qualitatif.

A noter que l'exposition couvre uniquement l'histoire de TWDC de manière chronologique au sens strict dans le sens ou par exemple des films acquis par Disney via des acquisitions (exemple Star Wars Episode I à VI) ne sont pas présentés mais ceux produits post acquisitions (exemple Star Wars VII à IX) le sont. Même logique pour les films Fox / 20th Studios.

Le catalogue de l'exposition est magnifique.

Ooooh un catalogue ? Je rêve de voir cette expo, mais je doute d'avoir le temps de voir la version de Londres (faute de moyens). Pourvu qu'elle arrive à Paris ! On a des rumeurs sur le sujet ?

Visitée aujourd’hui à Munich, l’exposition est vraiment très bien. Si vous êtes de passage à Munich: n’hésitez pas. Par contre ne faitent pas le voyage exprès.
Beaucoup de monde ce lundi 21 août 2023, mais cela ne gâche pas la très belle mise en scène digne de Disney. De très beau objets émouvants, mais malheureusement beaucoup de dessins et de manuscrits sont des fac-similés ! C’est un peu dommage.
Les magnifiques affiches créées pour les différentes sections de l’expo sont en vente à la boutique de l’expo qui comprend surtout des Tshirts et sweats.
