http://www.thedisneyblog.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2007/08/06/00wdwupdate004.jpg

A Time Traveler Comes Full Circle
Spaceship Earth is re-imagined by one of its original Imagineers
Bob Zalk was a wide-eyed, newly hired audio engineer when he took on one of his first projects with Walt Disney Imagineering: working on the mighty Epcot® icon, Spaceship Earth, now presented by Siemens. 25 years later, as Senior Show Producer, he found himself leading the team to take this all-time great attraction, and make it even greater for the 21st century and beyond. And you'll be able to experience the newly enhanced attraction this winter.
Bob and his team enhanced all of the scenes on this time-travel attraction with new lighting effects, costumes and set decoration, but even more than that, they also created an entirely new story "overlay" to blend the classic scenes with new ones and to add a special interactive aspect to its finale.
A new story for the enhancement
"We're telling a different story this time," he explained. "Our new story is essentially about how all the innovations of one generation influence and inspire another. There's definitely a relationship between the caveman in the early scenes, who is writing on walls, to our era in which we write on computers. It's a series of building blocks that add upon each other as we travel up through Spaceship Earth."
Once you reach the top of the 165-foot diameter Spaceship Earth geodesic dome, the new, interactive touch screens on your "time machine" vehicle will invite you to create your own visions of the future and see yourself in that future.
On top of all that, a new narration will be accompanied by an exciting new musical score composed and conducted by nine-time Emmy® Award winner Bruce Broughton, who has created music for many other major Disney attractions and films. "It's a challenge to create music for an attraction like this because you have to know how to blend the music seamlessly from scene to scene," Bob explained. "You want to treat an attraction with the kind of majesty it deserves and Bruce rises to the occasion."
"Project Tomorrow: Inventing the World of Tomorrow"
After you leave your time machine, you can explore a new interactive area with lots of fun and fascinating exhibits. "There's Body Builder, in which you wear 3-D glasses to assemble a digital human body (who talks back to you!), and simulates Siemens' remote surgery technology," Bob explained. "Then we have Super Driver, a driving simulation video game that showcases Siemens' auto accident avoidance systems.
"Innervision shows you the future of medical diagnostics in your home—something like your bathroom mirror giving you diagnostics on your body. And Power City is a game what shows how to manage power in a growing city, from routing power to neighborhoods where it's needed to replacing fossil fuels with wind and solar power."
All time favorites will live on through time
But the essence of Spaceship Earth will remain a constant. "Everything that everyone loved about the attraction—the smell of Rome burning, the monk snoring—will still be there, but it will be a new experience in a good many ways," Bob explained. "I think we're all mindful of the tradition that these kinds of attractions hold. So when we approach it as a team, we do it very carefully. You want to keep the ingredients that made it special."
And it's personally very special to Bob Zalk. "Coming in as a young Imagineer 25 years ago and getting to work on something like Spaceship Earth-I was just in awe, not only of the attraction, but also of the people I was privileged to work with and their years with the company. I learned a lot from them. Now at this point, we have young people on our team and we're now mentoring these Imagineers. I'm getting an interesting flashback feeling. How often do you get a chance to work on something like this two times around?" |

The signs going in are brand spanking new, and they change colors. - The vehicles now have screens on them. - Going up it looks brand new. No crappy projections on the left side anymore. Near the top of the lift your screen will point you in the direction of a camera and tell you to show your face and smile. You'll see yourself on the screen next to the camera. Once your picture is taken the screen on your vehicles stays off until the end of the attraction. - Judi Dench is the new narrator. - Once at the top of the hill the projections of the caveman and mammoth are gone, but brand new projections of a caveman fighting a mammoth are now there. - They “cave-peeps” look almost exactly the same except for the leader moves much more fluidly. - The pharaoh's seen looks identical aside from his new crown. - The first real noticeable difference after that is the Shakespearean actors are gone. There is now a Greek teacher with four pupils sitting down in front of him. - The "Berries and Creme" guys that were sitting on the step near the statue are gone and the statue is totally different and is now covering her breasts. - The paper boy is moved and facing an empty wall for some reason. It was very odd looking and I'm not sure it will even stay there. He also has a new voice. - The clip of Snow White is gone and there is now a full fledge theater with silhouettes of people sitting in front of the screen where the old black and white movie was shown. The family that was watching Walt Disney now has an elaborate living room and are watching the moon walk. - Directly after, where the Japanese girl and the boy were talking over the internet is now an elaborate computer room. - After that, there is a new garage scene -- complete with mailbox and car outside. It actually looks very, very, very haunted house-ish (think PsychoScareapy - Home For The Holidays) as you approach it. Inside is a guy sitting on a computer and we are told people started working to bring computers into our very own homes. - The following scene -- with all the pretty lights before you see earth -- is now a matrix. - Once you start your descent backwards the video screens turn back on and you answer a series of questions on the touch screen. "Where do you live?", "When on vacation do you worry more about your home or pets?", "Are you a planner or do you like to wing it.", etc. - Everything from the entire descent of the ride is now stripped out and gone. In place are a bunch of trippy lights. Your attention is turned to the video screens where you see a video that’s based on your answers. I looked around and everyone around us had a different video. All the costumes and sets look amazing. A lot of the animatronics move fantastic now and look much more lifelike. I'm not sure how much I like Judi Dench as the narrator. It has a very different tone and her narration style is very different than Jeremy Irons. We actually broke down on the ride in front of burning Rome for about five minutes and were afraid we would be evac'd. Thankfully we weren't. It seems like the track didn't even get touched. It's still as bumpy as ever. I was a little disappointed with the descent since it was 100% totally on screens. We also never saw anything with out picture, which is expected since its only soft openings. Overall it was a nice update to a classic attraction and once everything is up and running it will be a major success.

| "The Descent of Hell": ça veut tout dire!! Voici un avis intéressant: http://disneyresortskingdom.com/article026.aspx L'avis de cet internaute: "I think the first half of this ride, up to Steve Job's garage, came out absolutely perfect (except for the music)! But then the entire second half of the ride is horrible. I mean for god's sake, some of the stuff in Project Tomorrow is better!! And the good thing is most Disney fans have complained about this refurb... So hopefully we can find "unity in the community" & get Disney to change the ride." |

| Spaceship Earth Still More Changes Even more changes have been folded into Spaceship Earth recently. On the tunnel up, they've added a shadow effect of smokestacks to imply industrialization in the scene that features the printing press (though the effect is on the opposite wall, near the ride vehicles). There's also a city backdrop now in the far corner of this set, where the newsboy was placed facing AWAY from our vehicles. It used to be he was calling off into the blackness, but now he faces a city. Just after that comes the telephone operators, and the wires over their heads are now brightly lit with green. That makes for an anachronistic look at history, but it's cool looking. Look! Cool lights! Then, on the descent tunnel, one corner area (that used to house the Spaceship Earth model) now sports some giant triangles, which glow on the edges as though painted and placed into blacklight. Similar triangles now grace the ceiling on the last part of the descent too, so there is something to look at, kind of. This is a very stop-gap kind of solution, and nowhere near enough in my opinion. There's a new visual as the final cartoon assembles. The greatest changes come in the postshow. The quiet benches now have banks of touchscreen monitors nearby. These were not switched on, but will be used to let patrons email home the image of their faces taken on the ride, presumably with the fake cartoon body attached. But no one was looking at the darkened monitors: everyone was looking straight ahead, and even forming a knot of people gawking and making a bottleneck. What was new? The globe has finally stopped with its messages of what's coming, and now shows a static image of the world. The faces from the ride pop into existence over the oceans, and hover there for a few seconds. Then, they zoom to a spot on the globe and leave a glowing dot, so that by the end of the day, some places have a LOT of glowing dots. This captures where people live, a question asked very early in the ride and apparently attached to your photo (for a while in the preview months, they stopped asking this question of where you live). On the side walls, where stars drifted by majestically (remember: earth is a spaceship moving through a starfield), there are now the same cartoon bodies and some live faces from the ride. So they are leveraging even more the on-ride photos. It's a lot more personalized in the post-show area now. I have mixed emotions. I really liked the quiet majesty of the globe moving through the cosmos, and I liked the quiet resting place of the padded benches. Both are now gone. But I can't help but notice that the patrons really enjoyed seeing their pictures and the pictures of their kids. This is one of those times where the masses have spoken, and this part they like. I don't think the descent tunnel and that awful cartoon while on the ride are pleasing to that many folks (a few, yes), but they did seem to want to linger to find their faces on the big postshow globe, and to watch their faces zoom to their hometowns. I'm sad that the old Spaceship Earth is quite gone and not coming back. The metaphor is now not one of interconnectedness (it used to be like "It's a Small World" in terms of theme), but of cartoony futures and goofiness. It's quirky fun, and I can see why Siemens would want us aware that they make all these technologies, but it's still a shame. The original Spaceship Earth had a function in the original EPCOT Center park, but both are being twisted beyond thematic recognition. http://miceage.com/kevinyee/ky030408b.htm |
