Vraiment magnifique !
Image conceptuelle : Shanghai Disney Resort.
Tomorrowland
The new Tomorrowland, created especially for Shanghai Disneyland, will be a venue of limitless possibilities. With imaginative design, cutting–edge materials and programmable spaces, it blends the best of mankind, nature and technology. Tomorrowland celebrates the hope, optimism and potential of the future – themes from the original Disneyland – now for a whole new culture and the next generations.
Disney’s innovative use of technology has produced a fresh land where guests will go to infinity and beyond on Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue, a new target-shooting adventure; break the bonds of gravity on Jet Packs; and step into the worlds of the Star Wars galaxy and Marvel universe. With the world premiere of TRON Lightcycle Power Run, guests will board two-wheeled Lightcycles for one of the most thrilling adventures at any Disney park. It’s a coaster-style attraction with high-speeds, an indoor-outdoor track and rich storytelling.
Guests of all ages, especially teens and young adults, will enjoy the atmosphere in Tomorrowland. On the lower level, a creative stage serves as a play space for bands, DJs, artists and dancers. A winding ramp to the upper concourse will take guests to Tron Plaza and the Stargazer Grill restaurant, which has spectacular views of Shanghai Disney Resort as well as the stage below.
The land’s aerodynamic design, technological edge and bright promise of tomorrow make it attractive for guests seeking new worlds of adventure. They will learn that Shanghai was chosen by Sam Flynn as a location for the permanent portal between Earth and his computer world of TRON; that the United Galactic Federation selected Tomorrowland as the ideal location for their Stitch Monitoring Station; and that Buzz Lightyear chose Tomorrowland as his Earth-bound Star Command station for the recruitment and mounting of planet-saving missions.
Here is a sampling of what guests will experience, with more details to come.
TRON Lightcycle Power Run
With the world premiere of TRON Lightcycle Power Run, the future world comes to Tomorrowland, through the inspiring story of the Disney film TRON: Legacy. Riding atop individual, two-wheeled Lightcycles, guests will be launched across a canopied section of track – the Upload Conduit – before diving high-speed into a mysterious game world of lights, projection and sound effects. Guests waiting to board will have fun imagining the future world as they listen to the evocative soundtrack and watch the Lightcycle trains twist and turn all around them, all under a color-shifting canopy. Even at a distance, guests will marvel at the massive, undulating canopy. Covered in a translucent material, it reveals the pulsing glow of Lightcycle trains as they zip through the attraction. The entire canopy is edged in a dramatic, blue-green ribbon that changes color as it rolls across, over and around the Tron Plaza, like the tail of a dragon. Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue
Guests will join a mission to help save the day on Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue, an interactive adventure inspired by the DisneyžPixar Toy Story films. The immersive, new storyline combined with a new, interactive targeting system will make this one of the most engaging attractions at a Disney park. The attraction features cosmic visuals, animated targets, LED screens and real-time feedback from the targeting system. As the story goes, the Evil Emperor Zurg is threatening to destroy the home planet of the Aliens. Buzz Lightyear calls out for more Space Rangers and park guests become his newest Star Command recruits, boarding their own spaceships and shooting on-board blasters with individualized colors. For every target hit, guests rise higher in the ranks of Buzz Lightyear’s elite squadron. Jet Packs
On Jet Packs, guests will become sky pilots, taking off on transportation of the future. Strapped into individual Jet Packs and with legs dangling, pilots will enjoy the thrill and wonder of flying. At the center of the attraction, the energy sphere will spin faster and faster as the ride progresses. Guests will be able to control how high their Jet Pack goes and, the higher they go, the more the vehicles will pitch forward. From their sky-high vantage point, pilots will have a breathtaking view of Tomorrowland and the rest of Shanghai Disneyland. Star Wars Launch Bay
In this celebration of the Star Wars Galaxy, guests will meet heroes and villains of the saga, visit iconic intergalactic set-pieces, view props and memorabilia from the most recent Episode, and be immersed in the Skywalker story through a state-of-the-art cinematic experience. Marvel Universe
Near the entry to Tomorrowland, guests will have an exciting opportunity to encounter some of the popular Marvel heroes and their super-powered tech. Guests will attend a multimedia mission briefing on the thrilling world of Marvel, get up-close with some of their favorite Marvel heroes and learn to draw some of the characters, just like a real comic book artist.
Stitch Encounter
With new humor and content for the Shanghai Disney Resort audience, Stitch – known as “Experiment 626” – engages in unrehearsed conversations, plays games, makes jokes and takes guests for a spin around the galaxy in “Stitch Encounter.” This real-time, interactive, live animated show will take place in one of two intimate theaters in Tomorrowland. It stars Stitch, the mischievous, animated alien from the Walt Disney Pictures animated film, Lilo & Stitch.
Stargazer Grill
From the upper concourse of Tomorrowland, Stargazer Grill will offer some of the most spectacular views in Shanghai Disneyland. From the outdoor deck, guests will be able to see the Enchanted Storybook Castle and beyond as they enjoy Chinese and Western food, including a variety of burgers. The largest restaurant in the theme park, Stargazer Grill will celebrate the architectural forms of Tomorrowland with a rippled sculptural design and a mix of futuristic comfortable seating positions. Natural light, sleek technology and the gracefully curved ceiling will create an understated sophistication, while glass orbs of light twinkle from the ceiling like stars in the sky. “Firsts” at Shanghai Disney Resort:
• First TRON Lightcyle Power Run attraction and innovative canopy: TRON Lightcycle Power Run makes its global premiere at Shanghai Disneyland. For the first time at a Disney park, guests will board Lightcycles, two-wheeled vehicles that take them inside and out on a coaster-like attraction with high speeds and rich storytelling. The attraction’s canopy is made of a lightweight, reflective material with special color-shifting edges, enhancing the guest experience.
• New target system and Space Cruisers: On Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue, guests will engagean innovative target system with real-time feedback and more than 100 targets, the most in any Buzz Lightyear attraction worldwide. The attraction also premieres a story line created for Shanghai Disneyland, with Buzz as a Space Ranger who recruits guests to board new vehicles – Space Cruisers – to help him fight the Evil Emperor Zurg.

Disney team conjures up a ‘new’ Tomorrowland
Walt Disney’s vision of the future is still inscribed on a plaque at the entrance to the world’s first Tomorrowland in California’s Disneyland built in the 1950s. It says: “Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure and ideals.”
Sixty years later, Mellissa Berry, Scot Drake and their colleagues have been planning what that future now looks like to create the new Tomorrowland for Shanghai Disney Resort. The result will become the sixth Tomorrowland in the worldwide Disneyland network.
“We didn’t want to refer to any existing architecture as we worked to create a whole new tomorrow world,” Berry, executive producer at Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai, told Shanghai Daily.
A former TV and film producer, Berry has been working on the Shanghai Disney project for over five years. She and Drake, executive creative director of the new Tomorrowland, have worked with a group of Imagineers from all over the world to brainstorm the concepts of a future world and turn them into physical structures.
It is a Disney tradition to set up a centerpiece themed land to showcase Walt Disney’s great vision for a big and beautiful tomorrow. There are versions of Tomorrowland in Florida, California, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong. The Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai team aims for the Shanghai iteration to offer a new vision into the future.
To achieve their “tomorrow” goals, Berry and Drake set off in 2009 with other Disney Imagineers to scour cities around the world looking for inspiration.
They went to the Eden Project in England where plants are collected from around world. They visited the famous gardens in neighboring Suzhou and experienced the West Lake show in Hangzhou. They also attended World Expo in Shanghai several times in 2010.
“When we first set foot in Shanghai, we were amazed to find the city itself has been a world of the future,” Drake said.
They also then realized the challenges they faced. The local population was already technologically savvy, he added.
They invited scientists and environmentalists to become involved in their brainstorming to ensure the best thinking and designs were considered.
Berry and Drake also visited Yuyuan Garden, studying the architectural philosophy behind Chinese landscape design.
“We analyzed the multi-level buildings, how the pathways unfolded, the moon gates and the shade areas in this historic city garden,” Berry said.
“While there would be no direct reference, we wanted to interpret this ancient design philosophy in a modern way.”
A feature of Shanghai’s Tomorrowland will be the world’s first Tron Lightcycle Power Run, a roller-coaster-style attraction that involves patrons boarding two-wheeled lightcycles on a high-speed, indoor-outdoor track.
Visitors can also join the new target-shooting adventure called Buzz Lightyear Planet Rescue, break the bonds of gravity on Jet Packs, and celebrate the entire Star Wars saga. The Stargazer Grill restaurant will offer spectacular views of Shanghai Disney Resort as well as the stage below.
An architectural highlight of the complex, the Lightcycle track is covered by a massive, undulating canopy. The entire covert is edged with a dramatic, blue-green ribbon that changes color as it rolls across, “like the tail of a dragon,” said Berry.
“Guests waiting to board will have fun imagining a future world as they listen to the evocative soundtrack and watch the Lightcycle trains twist and turn all around them, all under a color-shifting canopy,” she said.
To create the canopy that Berry said “embodies harmony with nature” and will be like landing lightly on the earth, the team used many cutting-edge design tools.
“Even the technology has progressed rapidly since we first started the project,” Drake said.
One of the major new tools is called “DISH,” or Digital Immersive Showroom, and it allows Berry, Drake and the project team to wear 3D glasses and walk on the virtually-simulated project.
“When we step onto the completed attraction after it’s built, we will feel like we have been there before,” Drake said.
The tool is a favorite of Drake who taught digital painting at a California college for seven years. He said it allows designers to “experience” the theme park to ensure the buildings and attractions are perfect.
Drake has been working for Disney for 16 years. Before the Shanghai project, he was art director of the 3D simulator attraction Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, and other Disney projects in Florida.
“Before working for Disney, I had always visualized the future and thought about what it could hold,” he said. “So the Shanghai project is a perfect opportunity for me to discover what tomorrow can be.”
Berry relocated to Shanghai from the United States in June 2014 and since then has been immersed in working with the local Imagineering team, local vendors, contractors and artists.
“It was eye-opening for me to work with so many talents from different fields,” she said.
After the resort’s grand opening in spring 2016, in Pudong’s Chuansha Town, Berry said she would take a vacation and spend a week touring around the resort. “I am going to be just like a five-year-old kid experiencing the park,” she said.
Drake’s first daughter was born five years ago, when he initially started working on the Shanghai Tomorrowland project, and a second daughter also has arrived. He hopes to bring both girls to see his Tomorrowland once it opens.
“The world would become a better tomorrow if people could be more creative and maybe inspired by Tomorrowland,” he said.
