- What it's like inside the secret, members-only club hidden in Shanghai Disneyland
One of the most exclusive restaurants in Disney Parks is Club 33. The members-only club with a years-long waiting list and a secret entrance in Disneyland opened in 1967.
Another Club 33 opened June 2016 when Shanghai Disney Resort opened in China. Four more are planned to open in each of Walt Disney World's parks. Not anyone can visit Disney's hidden gem. You need to be a member or invited to dine inside.
One way you can get invited is if you visit China through a group vacation with Adventures by Disney. That's what Heather Concannon did this past summer with her family. As part of the tour, they dined at Club 33 in Shanghai's Disneyland park.
If you can't get to Shanghai Disneyland, Concannon shared photos of her trip to Club 33 with INSIDER. Keep reading to see what it's like inside one of the most exclusive clubs Disney has to offer.
Club 33 in Shanghai Disney is hidden in the Main Street area of the park called Mickey Avenue. The entry is marked with a "33" overhead.

"It's basically behind Main Street," said Concannon. "You made a left and next to Shanghai's version of the Emporium they had a little doorway that said 33 above it. You had to ring a doorbell to get in."
When you're looking at a map of Shanghai Disneyland, it's close to the park's entrance.
For any Disney fans who want to search for Club 33, here's where you can find it in the park. Courtesy Heather Concannon
Concannon said the exit dropped her family right off in Shanghai's version of Downtown Disney called Disneytown.
You can't just show up in your park clothes. The restaurant has a business casual dress code. It's not tough to see why when you enter the atrium and wait to be seated.
Pink flowers were everywhere in Club 33 during the summer. Courtesy Heather Concannon
Concannon and her family had to drop off their bags and change before dining.
The theme of Shanghai's Club 33 was inspired by Disney's third animated movie, 1940's "Fantasia."

The staircase is adorned with chandeliers and the sugar plum fairies from the Nutcracker Suite in "Fantasia."
They were brought to the Garden View room to dine.

It was a giant circular room filled with round tables and a floral centerpiece.
"I took a thousand photos of the centerpiece, because I thought it was beautiful," said Concannon.

The entire space felt classier than what you may be used to seeing inside a Disney park restaurant. That makes sense when you know the original Club 33 in Disneyland was built to entertain VIP guests at the park.
More private, intimate rooms with curtains were off to the sides.
Gorgeous artwork adorned each wall. Courtesy Heather Concannon
The private rooms offered a more romantic setting.
Concannon's group ate at a large round table in the room.
The table was large enough to seat 10 people. Courtesy Heather Concannon.
They were lucky enough to have most of the giant room to themselves when they visited over the summer.
You know you're eating at Club 33 when all of the dishware is labeled with the iconic number.
The napkin holder matched perfectly with the design on the plates. Courtesy Heather Concannon.
In case you weren't sure where you were, all of the coasters on the table also had the number 33 printed on them.
Since they were there with Adventures by Disney, they ordered off of a pre-selected menu with a five-course meal.
Here's what a menu at Club 33 at Shanghai Disneyland looks like. Courtesy Heather Concannon
They were able to choose between a short rib or fish for the main entree.
The appetizer was a grapefruit sorbet with green apple wasabi granite and dill oil.

They were also given two glasses of red or white house wine with their meal. One of the main entrées was a slow-cooked Australian wagyu short rib with chili glaze, apple salad, and parsnip purée.

Each part of the five-course meal was a small portion so you didn't get filled up too quickly.
After they were done dining, a balcony allowed them to see the park at large.
You can see the Tron ride (far left), the iconic castle, and the park's carousel (right), which is also "Fantasia"-themed. Courtesy Heather Concannon
"Once you walk through the restaurant, they have a firework-viewing area. That's what the balcony is [for]," said Concannon.
At the end of the night, it's the perfect place to watch the park's fireworks display.
It doesn't get much better than this. Courtesy Heather Concannon
"The view is worth it, especially because it's so crazy to watch the fireworks in front of the castle [in Disney World] these days," said Concannon. "It was nice to be able to watch it and hear the music and experience it with just our group and two other couples." And because it's Disneyland, you can also go home with some souvenirs.
Concannon may have taken one of the coasters with the 33 on it, too, as a keepsake. Courtesy Heather Concannon
"They had a store where you could purchase a polo, a tie, a bag," said Concannon. "I bought a pen, a notebook, and a mug because I figured I'm never doing this again in my life."

StellaLou Joins Shanghai Disney Resort This Spring
This spring also marks the arrival of Duffy’s newest friend, StellaLou, a spunky and determined lavender rabbit. When they met, StellaLou told Duffy of her ambitions to become a Broadway dancer and taught him what it means to “follow your dreams.” Now, she has danced her way to Shanghai Disneyland to join Duffy and his friends on Mickey Avenue.
A special welcome ceremony for StellaLou will be hosted at the Storytellers Statue on March 8 – the first day of the spring season at the resort and International Women’s Day – and will feature Minnie Mouse, Daisy, ShellieMay and other friends from Mickey Avenue, as StellaLou makes her first official appearance in Shanghai.

The new lineup includes 16 exclusive items ranging from specially-designed limited edition pins to chic jewelry, phone cases and more. Plus, Remy’s Patisserie and Il Paperino will be serving up some sweet new treats to celebrate her arrival, like key lime milkshakes, blueberry parfaits, macaroon gift boxes, jasmine cheesecakes topped with mini StellaLou chocolates, and a collectible StellaLou drink goblet. Guests visiting Disneytown this spring may also see StellaLou during pop-up performances from Friday to Sunday.

New buds and blossoms will provide fresh spring surprises for guests visit after visit. Guests will explore the unique charm of their favorite flowering plum and Yulan magnolias in March, see a burst of iconic cherry trees, vibrant azaleas and whimsical wisteria in April, and be immersed in the romantic floral experience with a rainbow of red, yellow and white roses in May.
New Entertainment, Events, Merchandise and Treats to Celebrate the Season
The spring will bring lots of new fun to Shanghai Disney Resort this year with new entertainment, festivities, merchandise, food and beverage and events throughout the season, including:
• Egg-tastic Festivities for Spring
Some egg-stra special festivities will include a fun egg expedition that builds on the popular egg scavenger hunt from last spring at Shanghai Disney Resort. The large sculpted eggs from Gardens of Imagination and Disneytown will return once again – now with brand new eggs decorated as Duffy and friends. And to celebrate the opening of the new Disney • Pixar Toy Story Land, extra-special eggs featuring the Toy Story characters will be there for guests to discover and snap photos with.
• New Spring Performances with Duffy’s friend StellaLou
This spring, the Mickey Avenue Disney friends will be on hand to welcome StellaLou with style. The new “Duffy and Friends” show takes place in front of the Whistle Stop Shop and will feature a group of dancers alongside Mickey, Minnie, Duffy, ShellieMay, Gelatoni, and of course StellaLou. Guests will be invited to join the show as StellaLou leads everyone in a fun choreographed number. In addition, both Gelatoni and StellaLou will join the cast of “Zao Shang Hao, Mickey”, the popular character gathering in Celebration Square every morning from March 9 to June 1, 2018.
• Themed Merchandise For Guests of All Ages
For a limited time only, Shanghai Disney Resort will launch more than 30 specially designed merchandise items featuring spring colors and designs. The tradition of bunnies and eggs carries over to this season’s new lineup. Guests will find plush toys, bags, mugs, keychains and more, including a Judy Hopps egg-shaped plush cross-bag and a bright notepad shaped like eggs in a flower basket.

"To all who come to this Happy Place, welcome !

| Editorial écrit par l'artiste Reagan Louie pour The New York Times : - Citation :
- Mickey Mouse Works His Magic in China
Mr. Louie is a photographer and artist whose work explores cross-cultural identity and global transformation in Asia and in Asian-American communities.
The crush at the entrance to Shanghai Disneyland was particularly chaotic, even for China. Squeezed and jostled, I cursed under my breath.
It didn’t seem like this was going to be the happiest place on earth if everyone kept trying to cut in line.
But once inside the park, the crowds changed behavior. They were polite. Everyone waited patiently in long lines, respectfully observing rules like no spitting or allowing children to use bushes as toilets. They behaved like loyal Disney fans everywhere. As I reflected on my memories, my excitement both as child and as parent, I wondered what the Chinese, adults and children, were feeling and thinking. I pondered the larger questions of how culture and values are transmitted and internalized. How does indoctrination work ?
Shanghai Disneyland, the first Disney theme park in mainland China, opened in 2016 after five years of construction. I visited the 963-acre park last year. And I had my family on my mind the whole time.
Watching Chinese families frolic in Walt’s magic kingdom drew me back to the first time my parents took me to Disneyland in Anaheim — and the first time I introduced Disney to my own children. For my parents, Chinese immigrants to the United States, bringing the family to Disneyland was a partial fulfillment of the American dream.
When I began photographing in China in the early 1980s, Chinese people seemed wary of anything cultural. Most Chinese distrusted the Communist Party’s sanctioned art; it was not entertainment, it was propaganda. They knew it was all fake, but had little opportunity to express their own individual experiences. The government’s ham-handed attempts at culture pushed toward foreign influences, especially American.
Like America in the 1950s, China is now undergoing a middle-class boom with similar aspirations; material wealth, leisure, travel, sophistication. For American baby boomers, visiting Disneyland became a necessary rite of passage. Globalization has helped make institutions like Disney popular in China. Will going to Disneyland now become a ritual for aspirational Chinese families ?
When the park was still in the planning stages, the Chinese government insisted Shanghai Disneyland needed to be different from the other magic kingdoms, especially the parks in Asia, which are copies of their American counterparts. Iconic figures and structures, like Mickey and the Enchanted Castle, are of course featured. But Main Street — too Western — was replaced by Mickey Avenue, a mash-up of Western and Eastern architecture. The castle, the largest of the six Disney castles, accommodates all the princesses in the Disney universe — perhaps because only one princess would be too elitist for Communists. And although there are long lines for giant turkey legs, Chinese food remains the most popular fare. The result, as Disney’s C.E.O., Bob Iger, claims, is a park that is “authentically Disney, distinctly Chinese.”
I asked several Chinese park-goers what their Disney experience was like. Were they assimilating Western values or simply having a good time? Older teenagers and adults claimed immunity to any ideology. But I am not so sure the youngest children were unaffected. Watching the pleasure and joy in their faces, girls in their princess costumes, convinced me that some of Walt’s values — American values — were leaking through.
