Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. Photo : Shanghai Disney Resort. |

- Shanghai Disney riding high and on track to overtake Hong Kong ‘rival’
Shanghai Disney Resort attracted in six months almost as many visitors as its Hong Kong counterpart lures in a whole year despite harsh criticism about expensive food and long queues inside the park.
Fan Xiping, chairman of Shanghai Shendi Group, a state-backed consortium that owns 57 per cent of the 34 billion yuan (HK$38.2 billion) amusement project, said 5.6 million people – or an average of 30,000 each day – visited the complex in the second half of last year, Xinhua reported on Sunday.
“The number of 5.6 million is on par with the Disneyland in Japan and is nearly equivalent to the full-year visitor number for the Hong Kong counterpart,” he said.
In 2015, Hong Kong Disneyland attracted 6.8 million visitors.
Hongyuan Securities forecast the park, Disney’s sixth worldwide, would at least draw 10 million visitors a year.
Speaking on the sidelines of the annual session of the city’s people’s congress and the political consultative conference, Fan said 80 per cent of visitors were satisfied with the park’s attractions and services, according to an independent survey.
Shanghai mayor Yang Xiong said in a government work report to the congress that the resort’s launch was one of the city’s major achievements last year.
Shanghai Disney Resort officially opened on June 16 after a month-long test run. It initially attracted criticism for the high cost of food and long queues inside the theme park.
Then, in the first three months after the launch, the operators controlled the number of daily tickets for sale to ensure smooth running of the mega project.
Disney and the Shanghai government have tried to play down speculation about the rivalry between the Disney resort and its counterparts in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
The Shanghai Disney resort mainly targets the estimated 330 million people who live within a three-hour drive of the project.
Fan said 53 per cent of the visitors were from the Yangtze River Delta region, with Shanghai résidents accounting for 27 per cent of the people passing through the gates.
The 3.9 sq km Disney resort in Shanghai is the latest manifestation of the city’s ambitions to become a world city.
Yang said on Sunday that Shanghai would press on this year with its push to transform itself into a global financial and shipping centre.
“Shanghai will further liberalise the green bond market, drive the growth of the financial technology sector with improvements to the regulatory system and complete the construction of the fourth-phase expansion of the Yangshan deep-water port,” he said.
The new container port facility at Yangshan will have a capacity to handle 4 million 20-foot-equivalent unit (teu) containers a year, adding to the roughly 15 million teus the port can handle now

- Shanghai Disney welcomes nearly 6 mln visitors in 7 months
Shanghai Disneyland received close to 6 million visitors in the first seven months of it opening in mid-June, Fan Xiping, chairman of Shanghai Shendi Group, Disney's Chinese partner, said Monday.
Fan, who is also a member of the standing committee of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said 5.6 million people had visited Shanghai Disneyland by Dec. 31, 2016.
Eighty percent of the visitors said they were "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with their visits, according to a third party survey.
Meanwhile, Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and Toy Story Hotel reported up to 90 percent occupancy. The first-ever Mandarin production of "The Lion King" was staged over 220 times, making it the most-run Broadway musical in the Chinese mainland.
"Both sides from China and the US are satisfied with the park's performance," Fan said. "We'll work together to improve our operational and service standards, to deliver exceptional service to visitors from all over the world."
Previously, Walt Disney, in its 2016 fiscal year report, said that Shanghai Disneyland received 4 million visitors in its first four months of operation.

- Shanghai Disney attracts 5.6 million tourists in half year
As of December 31, 2016, Shanghai Disneyland had received 5.6 million tourists. It opened on June 16, 2016, making it one of the fastest Disneyland resorts in the world to attract 5 million tourists, Shanghai Morning Post reports.
Fan Xiping, president of the Chinese operator of Shanghai Disney (Shanghai Shendi Group), told the Post on Saturday that their survey showed over 80 percent of tourists felt satisfied with the service at Shanghai Disneyland. Occupancy rates of the two themed hotels at the resort have been greater than 90 percent, and the Chinese version of Disney musical "The Lion King" has been performed more than 200 times, Fan added.

- Decorative Candies Taken Away by Tourists at Shanghai Disneyland
Visitors to Shanghai Disneyland walked away with decorative candies from a Donald Duck holding a candy box, according to a netizen’s Weibo post.
The Donald Duck is dressed in traditional Chinese outfit in celebration of the upcoming Spring Festival. As people.com.cn showed, lots of candies can be seen in the box at the very beginning. But on January 10, only half left and three days later, there were even fewer.
Some web users commented as following:
“While children can be thoughtless, then how about their parents?”
“If you really like the accessories, why not go buy the sideline products at the souvenir store?”
“The decorative candies were glued to the box to prevent people from taking them away, and the staff perhaps didn’t expect that someone really did it!”
“It’s kind of a ‘follow suit’ mentality. Someone might think they lose something if they don’t follow others to take away the candies. What a shame!”

- Outcry after Chinese tourists ‘steal’ Donald Duck’s sweets
Decorative candies nabbed from statue of the cartoon character at Disney resort in Shanghai
Photographs of how tourists stole decorative sweets from a tray held by a Donald Duck statue at Shanghai Disneyland went viral on the internet, with many criticising their dishonesty.
The resort set up the statue as part of decorations to mark the forthcoming Lunar New Year holiday.
The sweets were largely decorative as they were made of plastic foam placed in candy wrappers, but that did not stop tourists stealing them for souvenirs.
A set of photographs which documented the thefts attracted huge attention online, showing Donald Duck holding a full stack of candy on the first day and left with an almost empty plate three days later.
Many social media users condemned tourists for stealing.
The website of the state news agency Xinhua also reported the story on social media and parents were quoted as saying they stole the sweets simply because their children asked for them.
Many social media users criticised the parents for not disciplining their children.
One social media user said he felt embarrassed as a Chinese citizen that so many of his fellow compatriots lacked the most basic decorum as to how to behave in public.
Another social media user wrote: “If you can’t discipline your own hands, you shouldn’t have them.”

SHANGHAI Disneyland has received about 7 million visitors since its opening in June last year, a figure that senior resort officials say will help them to break even this year.
The Walt Disney Company today reported quarterly earnings for its first fiscal quarter ending December 31, 2016. Revenues for the quarter reached US$14.784 billion and net income was US$2.479 billion.
The growth was due to the opening of Shanghai Disney Resort in Q3 of fiscal 2016, said Christine McCarthy, the company’s chief financial officer. She said improved results at both Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland helped boost revenues.
“One of our biggest success stories in 2016 came from parks and resorts, with the opening of Shanghai Disneyland,” said Robert Iger, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer.
He said Shanghai Disneyland could potentially exceed 10 million in total attendance by its first anniversary.
“The park’s rapidly growing popularity, it’s extremely high levels of guest satisfaction, and the huge attendance during Chinese New Year, add to our confidence in the resort’s ability to reach break even in this fiscal year,” Iger said.
The park proved to be popular with visitors during the Chinese New Year holiday — operating at maximum capacity for virtually the entire of holiday period.
Ticket sales had to be limited or suspended due to high attendance.
Shanghai Disney Resort includes a Magic Kingdom style theme park, two themed hotels, a Broadway style theater, an international shopping, dining and entertainment district and Wishing Star Park.
The resort’s “Authentically Disney and Distinctly Chinese” design, entertainment and attractions concepts have proved to be popular with Chinese consumers.

- Shanghai Disney eyes over 10m visitors
THE Shanghai Disney Resort has received around 7 million visitors since its opening in June, which will help the park break even this fiscal year, senior officials said yesterday.
The Walt Disney Co reported on Tuesday that net profit for its fiscal first quarter ended on December 31 dropped 14 percent to US$2.48 billion from a year earlier. Quarterly revenue shrank 3 percent to US$14.78 billion.
But the opening of Shanghai Disney Resort and improved results at both Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland helped growth at the international parks unit, said Christine McCarthy, Disney’s chief financial officer.
Robert Iger, its chairman and chief executive officer, said: “One of our biggest success stories in 2016 came from Parks and Resorts, with the opening of Shanghai Disneyland.”
He said the Shanghai Disney Resort could potentially exceed 10 million visitors by the park’s first anniversary.
“The park’s rapidly growing popularity, its extremely high levels of guest satisfaction and the huge attendance during Chinese New Year add to our confidence in the resort’s ability to reach break-even in this fiscal year,” Iger said.
He said other growth areas came from the US entertainment giant’s studio, which had three global hits, including “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
