- Adding a green accent to the Magic Kingdom
VISITORS to Shanghai Disney Resort will be bowled over by the magical aura and thrilling adventures that greet them. What many may not appreciate so readily is the resort’s commitment to preserving the natural environment.
For Li Hui, 31, that’s the main task. “We want the resort to become a showcase for environmental development in the city,” said the project development manager for environmental planning for Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai.
As such, Li and her team are implementing state-of-the-art energy-saving and recycling systems in the resort.
Li said her job has been twofold. First, the team has been required to assess the environmental impact of all resort construction and will continue monitoring that impact after Shanghai Disney Resort opens. Secondly, the team is developing many environmental initiatives for the operating phase focused on energy saving and emissions reduction.
Shanghai Disney Resort has incorporated environment protection into all aspects of the resort development and future operations. For instance, a new technology to heat and cool the resort has been adopted in the project infrastructure development phase. By using waste energy from power generation and converting it in a Combined Cooling and Heating Power Plant, the overall energy efficiency of the resort has been increased by a factor of three, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from resort operation by 60 percent.
After obtaining a master’s degree in environment sciences at Tongji University, Li joined a local company involved in environmental, health and safety work.
“Most of my former classmates who wanted to do environment-related work usually had to go to governmental departments for jobs,” Li said. “The options to work for companies were not so plentiful.”
Disney gave Li that opportunity three years ago, and she accepted the job enthusiastically.
“Unlike many other companies, Disney had specific environment goals on various aspects including water and energy saving, and trash recycling,” she said. “Those guidelines extend to all its businesses.”
Indeed, Shanghai Disney Resort will be a paragon of environmental responsibility.
“The toilets in our hotels are all government-certificated water-saving models, and other water-saving appliances will be installed throughout the resort,” she said. “There will be strict recycling classification garbage bins, both for employees and visitors.”
In fact, the recycling bins in the resort won’t be the kind you see on the street, Li said.
“Shanghai already has recycling classification bins on the streets, but they’re all open and most people just drop litter at random,” said Li. “Our bins will be closed, with openings in the shape of the trash the bins are designed to take.”
For example, bins for beverage cans and bottles will have round openings at the top, while those for paper will have long, slim mouths.
Li said her visits to other Disney parks and resorts around the world impressed upon her the importance of teaching children about environmental protection.
“With many Disney programs designed to connect children with nature, children learn to appreciate the natural world around them and develop an interest in preserving it,” she said. “We would like to see these kinds of programs implemented in China, and plan to lead by example.”
Working for Disney has certainly been exciting and our team is commited to deliver the best Disney environmental practices here in China, Li said.
“When we went to the US for an annual environment summit with colleagues from other Disney parks and resorts, the high expectations for Shanghai Disney Resort were laid out,” she said.
“They were so excited to share their best practices and want us to absorb all the positive experiences of existing resorts and then go beyond that and create a new benchmark for Shanghai. It is a great challenge — one we are prepared to meet.”
Li said the Disney brand is so well-known and respected that family and friends are awed by her job.
“I suddenly have become very popular in my social circle,” she said. “Some old friends and acquaintances that I had lost contact with for years have reappeared over the Internet to ask me about my job.”
Q: Have you ever visited a Disney theme park? If so, what were your impressions?
A: I have been to Hong Kong Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. The park that impressed me the most was Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando. From an open safari vehicle, I got very close to wildlife, including lions and tigers. I came back and told my family about it, and they could scarcely believe the experience I recounted.
Q: What’s the most valuable thing you learned working on the Disney project?
A: The company has given me the opportunity to meet so many different people. I work with government officials, non-government organizations, primary school headmasters and, of course, environment industry leaders.
Q: What has the Disney project meant to your industry? Can you give some examples?
A: In China, the environment industry is new and rising. That means it is still underdeveloped. At present, we have a lot of ideas about things like garbage recycling, but it is often very difficult to find suppliers to fill our requirements. I think the Disney experience will help spur development in the industry and help cultivate more domestic suppliers.
Q: Why do you think the Disney project is important for Shanghai?
A: It is a big project promoting tourism in the city, and I think it will also establish a new and higher standard of services.
Q: What do you think makes Disney so special in its industry?
A: The company combines the stories it creates with the resorts it constructs. When you go to a Disney resort, you meet the characters you love and you are submerged in their magical world. It makes for a very special and unique experience.
Also, Disney operates on a corporate culture of freedom and imagination. Employees are encouraged to be innovative and develop their own creative ideas.

| Communiqué sur les activités de Jennie Xu, Ambassadeur Shanghai Disney Resort, qui a rejoint les Disney VolontEARS et a participé pour la première fois au programme de bénévolat. - Citation :
- Shanghai Disney Resort Ambassador and Disney VoluntEARS Teach Earth Day Values
400 Local Students Enjoy “FUN” Environmental Classes
To coincide with Earth Day on April 22, Shanghai Disney Resort’s first Ambassador Jennie Xu joined Disney VoluntEARS to lead a series of “FUN” environmental themed classes at Gonglu Primary School in Pudong District, near where Shanghai Disney Resort will be located. With support from local non-government organization “Shanghai Roots and Shoots,” over 400 local students learned a variety of environmental related skills including waste separation and recycling. These classes and hands-on experiments demonstrated the importance of environmental protection.
Cast Members at Shanghai Disney Resort participated in this event to celebrate Earth Month, a global initiative to encourage people to make decisions that have a positive impact on the environment we all share. Today’s inaugural environmental program is one of the key initiatives of Earth Month at Shanghai Disney Resort and will become part of the resort’s regular VoluntEARS program.
The event also marks the first official public appearance of Jennie Xu, the first Disney Ambassador of Shanghai Disney Resort. “I am so honored to be named the first Ambassador of Shanghai Disney Resort,” said Jennie. “I am excited that my first community event is to be a part of the Disney Earth Day celebration in order to share the importance of conservation with the community.”
During her two-year term from 2015 to 2016, Jennie will represent Cast Members of Shanghai Disney Resort and the goodwill of the community. She will also continue to lead VoluntEARS programs to present the resort’s commitment to local communities. Jennie previously served as the Learning and Development Specialist of Shanghai Disney Resort before she was selected as Disney Ambassador. She has recently celebrated her five-year anniversary with Disney.
The prestigious Disney Ambassador role dates back to 1964, when Walt Disney sought a representative for the 10th Anniversary of Disneyland Park in Anaheim, US in 1965. The legendary program continued to evolve in the last 50 years and has been introduced to Walt Disney parks and resorts around the world. Each Disney destination selects their own Disney Ambassador(s) from their Cast to serve as the emissary of goodwill, sharing the magic, inspiration, and optimism of Disney. The tradition is now introduced to Shanghai Disney Resort.

| Et un nouvel article du Shanghai Daily au sujet cette fois du programme de bénévolat des Disney VolontEARS : - Citation :
- VoluntEARS bring Disney magic to communities
THANKS to a volunteer program, young hospital patients and communities in Shanghai are sharing Disney joy ahead of tourists who will visit the first Disneyland on the Chinese mainland which is scheduled to open next year.
As Shanghai Disney Resort encourages staff to do volunteer work in local communities, Polly Shen, a specialist in the partner relationship office, is among those who have happily answered the call.
Shen has been participating in the resort’s weekly children hospital program visiting young patients at the Hematology and Oncology Center of Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. She brings gifts to the sick children, tells them Disney stories and plays games with them.
“As the mother of a 10-year-old girl, I am deeply touched whenever I see these children laughing as if they had forgotten their illnesses,” Shen said.
The Walt Disney Company launched Disney VoluntEARS in 1983. The program now operates in 42 countries, lending more than 8 million hours to volunteer work, ranging from helping the sick and disabled, participating in environmental clean-up campaigns and building community playgrounds.
In Shanghai, Shanghai Disney Resort’s Cast Members and Imagineers also visit local schools to give lessons on fire and water safety, and they are helping elementary school children plant organic gardens near the resort in Pudong’s Chuansha area.
Emily Wong, Citizenship and Community Relations manager at the resort, said employees are anxious to get involved and there is no dearth of volunteers. In fact, staff here feel very proud to participate in the volunteer programs and sometimes even involve their whole family to make contributions to the local community.
“The volunteer work aims to reward the local communities where our resorts operate, as well as communicate the Disney culture through activities such as ‘Reading Together,’ a storytelling program at Pudong Library,” she said.
Wong has been working in community relations with Disney resorts in Hong Kong and the United States for over 10 years. She took over leadership of volunteer programs for Shanghai Disney Resort in 2012.
“Local Cast Members not only apply to take part in the programs, but they also bring their children and even parents to also serve as volunteers,” Wong said.
The company encourages innovation in extending the Disney hand into communities.
For example, creative designers from Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai came up with Disney-themed hats and holiday masks to give to children who lose their hair in medical treatments.
The resort also set up an activity room filled with Disney imagery in the medical center in Pudong. Activities for children are held there every Friday.
“Children are always eagerly waiting for us on Fridays,” said Wong. “And they are reluctant to end the afternoon when it’s time to leave.”
She said the program will be expanded to other local hospitals with more Cast volunteers in the near future.
Wong, who personally takes part in volunteer activities, likes storytelling programs the best because, she said, they brings the magic world of Disney to Chinese children. Every weekend, Disney volunteers read stories to children, in both Chinese and English, at the Pudong Library.
The children appreciate stories like “Winnie the Pooh” and “Toy Story” as much as her own two daughters do. In fact, her eldest child dances the “up, down, touch the ground” routine for Chinese children.
But being a good corporate citizen doesn’t only involve children. The volunteer program also aims to brighten the lives of Chinese construction workers at the resort.
Every Chinese New Year and during the Lantern and Mid-Autumn festivals, Shanghai Disney Resort volunteers hold holiday celebrations with the laborers. During the events, “model workers” are recognized for their contributions to work safety and quality, and each worker receives a set of Disney gifts.
Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse sometimes also make an appearance during Spring Festival events, wearing traditional Chinese New Year outfits to deliver holiday greetings.
Sue Qu, a financial analyst with Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai, is among those who says she likes to interact with the construction workers.
“I have few opportunities to do that since my job is on the financial side,” Qu said.
“I could feel their hands and see the almost childlike smiles on their faces,” Qu said. “I felt they were such lovely people, and I wanted to talk with them more often.”
On weekends, Wong and several volunteers screen Disney movies outdoor at the construction site. “I was quite impressed that many workers who didn’t bring chair were willing to stand for two-and-half hours to watch ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’,” she said.
As more employees join the resort with the grand opening in Spring 2016, Wong said the resort plans to organize more Disney VoluntEARS programs to serve local residents and further share the Disney spirit.

- Disney executive returns to her roots in China
CHINA-BORN American Doris Woodward has returned to her family roots to work as senior director and executive producer of Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai — her sixth Magic Kingdom project.
Her parents were both born in Shanghai but emigrated to Hong Kong before she was born. Woodward grew up in Hong Kong, and then went to the United States for college when she was 18.
After graduation and work at a theme park in San Francisco, she joined The Walt Disney Company as a designer in 1979. She reckons Shanghai Disney Resort will be the swan song of an illustrious career.
“My heritage is here,” said Woodward. “I’m a Shanghainese. With my background and family, I think I can say that one of our priorities is to pay attention to our guests and provide the best of Disney to the people of China.”
“It’s very clear that the market demands are different here,” she said. “We needed to determine how to approach them, how to connect them, how to experience them. I was lucky to be able to help my fellow team members from around the world to learn about this country.”
It was of foremost importance to truly understand what Chinese visitors to the park would enjoy.
The team has taken years to study the market. As a result, Woodward said, the attractions, entertainment, festival celebrations, merchandise, food and beverage as well as services in Shanghai Disney Resort will be all authentically Disney but also unique for the guests here.
“It’s all about getting back to basics, back to the core story of the Magic Kingdom,” she said. “There must be a reason why the parks are so beloved around the world.” However, Woodward promised a little “twist” that will give the new park freshness and blend well with the Chinese market.
“American people all grow up with Disney, but the brand first entered the Chinese market back in 1938 and many of our stories and characters have been so popular with the people here. We believe the new resort will help create even more amazing dynamics in the Chinese environment,” she said.
Although she had never actually lived in Shanghai prior to her current assignment, Woodward feels a deep kinship with the city. This is not surprising, as given her family heritage, she speaks quite fluent Shanghainese but hardly any Mandarin.
She is also a rather accomplished cook with authentic Shanghai cuisine, admitting that her American husband and two daughters really love her stewed meatballs with brown sauce.
Growing up in Hong Kong, Woodward dabbled in modeling and singing. Not particularly fond of serious study, she was a bit anxious, she said, when she graduated from high school.
“Chinese families always want to you go to business school, medical school or law school, and those were not for me,” she said. “I knew I couldn’t do that. I thought the only way to succeed in college was to go to art school. I believed I could draw my way through without intense studying, and my parents understood me.”
Woodward said one of the first projects she worked with at Disney featured strong Chinese elements. At that time, the company was building EPCOT Center in Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where she worked as a graphic designer and stylist on international pavilions.
She spent nearly seven years on the project, working with people from six countries, including China.
“I designed a lot of exhibits in the China pavilion,” she recalled. “I worked with the Palace Museum in Beijing to display everything, including terra cotta soldiers from Xi’an and an imperial clock collection that had never been exhibited outside China.”
She said it was a challenging experience to balance the presentation of treasures from other countries with Disney’s attention to detail.
“I had to be really aware of different perspectives, which was very interesting,” she said.
In her 30-plus years with Disney, Woodward’s talent led her to different projects in the company.
“My roles and interests expanded,” she said. “I evolved from a designer to a producer. I have to focus on a lot of things, like content, budget and schedule. All my previous projects lead me to Shanghai.”
Woodward is now the creative director and executive producer for Shanghai Disney Resort’s Disneytown, an exciting shopping, dining and entertainment area adjacent to the resort’s theme park, Shanghai Disneyland. “I feel my whole career has helped prepare me to be part of the creative team tasked to bring Chinese cultural elements to the area, from colors to symbols,” she said. “Guests visiting Disneytown will encounter fun and familiar Chinese experiences around every corner.”
Woodward said her goal has always been to create a world that immediately captivates people who step into it. She said she hopes visitors to Shanghai Disney Resort will be able to leave their normal world behind them and experience something new and magical.
“It’s the feeling and emotion attached to the project that makes it so special,” she said.

| La journaliste Hu Min du Shanghai Daily a du participer à la préouverture organisée ce weekend au Disney Store Shanghai Lujiazui car voici un article publié ce lundi 18 mai : - Citation :
- Curtain raising on Disney store
WALT Disney Co’s first retail store in China — the biggest in the world — will open in the Pudong New Area on Wednesday.
More than 2,000 Disney products, including clothing, smartphone covers, stationery and bags, will be sold in the Shanghai store at 180 Fenghe Road in Lujiazui.
The store’s opening is part of the run-up to the opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort in the spring of 2016 — the first Disney theme park on China’s mainland.
It will contain a 5.8-meter high mock-up of the Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland castle at its entrance, said Disney.
The Tsum Tsum Plush Collection, the most popular Disney toy range sold globally, will also be stocked in the new Shanghai store, said Disney officials.
Prices of products will range from about 20 yuan (US$3.2) to more than 1,000 yuan, it was reported yesterday.
Prices are generally about 20-50 yuan more expensive than in Hong Kong and Tokyo Disney shops, thepaper.cn reported.
The shopping experience will also be interactive.
A three-minute show with clips of Disney movie classics will be shown on screens in the store every hour, when lights will be dimmed.
Favorite Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck and Pluto were suspended from the ceiling in hot air balloons.
There will also be a Marvel section where visitors can see hand-made sculptures of some Marvel characters such as Iron Man, the Hulk and Captain America, said officials.
In front of the store will be an outdoor square, featuring flowerbeds in the shapes of iconic Disney images.
The store will be open daily from 10am to 10pm.
