Disney float set to make festival debut
A DISNEY-THEMED float with classic characters will make its debut at the opening parade of the Shanghai Tourism Festival next month, organizers said yesterday.
A team of Chinese and foreign experts is now working on the design of the float that will blend authentic Disney features with distinctly Chinese elements, the Shanghai Disney Resort said.
Waving to the crowds will be Disney favorites that will delight the young and rekindle childhood memories among older onlookers, said Yang Jinsong, director of the Shanghai Tourism Administration.
This is the first time that Shanghai Disney Resort, which is set to open in late 2015, has taken part in the event.
The parade in downtown Huaihai Road will be held on September 13 and feature 22 floats and 32 performance troupes — with 24 coming from 16 foreign countries including the United States, Italy, Germany, Australia and Chile.
The event will gather together more than 1,400 performers, a record in the 20-plus year history of the festival.
Meanwhile, a total of 56 scenic spots, such as Fengjing Water Town, will offer up to half-price discounts for part of the festival, organizers said.
The Shanghai Tourism Festival will run from September 13 to October 6.
Other highlights include a musical set against the backdrop of old Shanghai in the 1930s at the Yunfeng Theater, fireworks at Century Park, light and dance show “Shanghai Story,” a cruise ship flotilla on the Huangpu River and a group wedding at the Bund, organizers said.
Events also include an international magic festival and a kite flying festival.

Completion of Shanghai Disney Resort’s 35kv Substation Introduces New Technologies
Shanghai Disney Resort recently passed a new milestone with the powering up of the resort’s 35 kilo volt substation. With the strong support from the State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company, the substation is providing power to the resort development and will supply the future operation of the resort’s theme park and parking facilities.
As a key infrastructure project for Shanghai Disneyland, the resort’s Magic Kingdom-style theme park, the 35kv substation is a perfect example of how innovative design and technology practices are being used in achieving the digitalization of the resort development. The substation is equipped with an advanced digital collection system which allows for remote monitoring of all associated equipment. The resort’s operation team will be able to track the power consumption information, and use this data to analyze the theme park’s electricity load and power quality and efficiently manage facility operations and maintenance.
“At Shanghai Disney Resort we are devoted to seeking new technology, which reduces our impact on the environment, saves resources, and promotes sustainable technology, while supporting technology transfer and localization,” said Howard Brown, Project Development Executive, Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai. “The design and development of our 35kv substation is a perfect fit with our commitment, and we are excited to work with the State Grid to provide critical power supply to support the development and future operation of our resort.”
“As a large-scale state-owned company, we are very excited to contribute to the development of Shanghai Disney Resort, the first Disney resort in mainland China,” said the project leader of State Grid Shanghai Municipal Electric Power Company. “We have been inspired by the strong commitment to quality and environment from the Shanghai Disney Resort team, and we are glad to combine Disney standards with best local practices to provide the high quality products and services to the resort.”
